Welcome to

a personal outline

for newcomer tours

on desktop + PCVR

(try this for Quest!)

!

Navigation Tips

1. If you're viewing this presentation on desktop at the /fullscreen link, hit the Escape key to step back to a bird's eye view!

2. This type of presentation uses up/down as well as left/right depending on the slide, keep an eye on the lower-right arrows!

3. For those just wanting a reference list with less traveling between so many slides, see that link's appendix. 👍

4. The target audience for this "guide" = a seasoned VRChat player touring around their offline/online friend who's curious about the game... but maybe has you asking where to take them!

Tour Priorities

i.e. The full world list here took our group ~6 hours to complete. So to ensure guests see things that actually interest them, have them rank their preferences prior to the planned-on join time!

  • Choosing an Avatar
  • Song Visualizers
  • Playable Games
  • Creative Hobbies
  • Surreal and Abstract
  • Cozy and Chill
  • Meme
  • Recreating Games
  • Reimagining Games
  • Shaders and Technical

Sidenotes

Things that've popped up from past tours!

Past needs/asks:

  • How to join up (requests)
  • How to limit joins (friends+)
  • How to configure volumes
  • How to set portal prompt
  • How to respawn
  • How to empty their cache

Things to bear in mind

  • Some friends may rocket past, find avatar worlds themselves
  • They may ask why some poses or toggle options lean NSFW
  • VRChat crashing or glitching
  • Audio falloff volumes
  • Fitting in restroom breaks!

1st-time VR Guests

(i.e. skip if your guests are on desktop mode, controls for that here)

Adjusting for VR

If joining them on a separate computer, log them into their Steam account instead of yours before opening VRChat!

(If on your account, might wanna be sure you're set to red status... 🙃)

Once the headset's on and they're can see the VR platform's system menus:

  • Readjust straps/knobs
  • Ensure text reads fine
  • Adjust the IPD, can get measurements by using a mirror and a ruler

First World: Tutorial

(unless you're just showing them on your account,
or your friend isn't with you offline due to the 1/1 user cap)

Helps to let them know that most people chuck the one from this first big mirror, a good opportunity to ask if Avatar Worlds appeal to them after explaining the idea.

Some might have a specific avatar style that interests them to keep in mind to search for together later on!

Their First Avatar

Comfort

if VR, check that they're okay with normal walk + heavy vignette or if they'd like to adjust up/down (or use teleport)

Will probably at least want Comfort Turning enabled

Controls

Navigating menus: easiest to just name specific parts to click on, step by step. As we repeated bits, they got the muscle memory down

Depending on the world, expect to have to work out how to grab objects, e.g. a desktop vs. Quest vs. Index all have different feels for it

The Wall of Publics

Insert your personal take on what a public instance is like here. :)

I personally used this as an opportunity to let them decide whether they wanted to make the subsequent worlds we visited public vs. private, just for agency's sake.

(So far nobody's chosen public, but still)

For all subsequent slides from here on:

Lean into what your group likes,
cut/swap what your group doesn't!

+ If in VR, ask if they'd like a break every few worlds! While resting, my friend and I switched, showing them a few of the worlds (mostly on the less interactive end) while they watched.

Avatars

(can skip if they're 100% fine with a Tutorial world pick!)

Public Avatar Worlds

  • Videogame IP
  • Cartoon/Meme IP
  • Anime/Game IP
  • Assorted IPs
  • Gothic Chibi
  • Semireal Anime
  • Furry Bases

Public Avatar Worlds

Sample Avatar Markets

  • Avatar Museum 6
  • ⚠ ~450mb size ⚠
  • Next slide down shows the flashy one I like to demo
  • ~60 sections instead of ~20
  • Avatar Museum Q2
  • A much nicer ~75mb size
  • Quest-compatible, so these are likelier to avoid fallbacks
  • "Detachable mouth" avi...?

1. Grab from Avatar Museum 6 (can favorite it outside the tour so guests don't have to load it all), in below section #63:

2. In the menu, tap Expressions > Harbour Driver > Reset.
(Makes armor vanish, just shows plain scuba suit beneath.)

3. Then, waiting for each step to finish, keep tapping Next. If guests don't see it, check their avatar audio/shield settings!

4. Can independently Reset <-> Summon the Dive Triangler.

A Song Visualizer

(may want to adjust world volume slider!)

The Edge

Mochie

  • First, wait for everyone to load into the world.
  • Then, click on the tall thin interactable to start the visualizer.
  • Once the song ends, visuals return to how they were at the start.
  • At that point, you're ready to move on!

Soloable Games

can ask "monkey ball, CSGO platforming, or mini-golf?" -- or dip into others' ideas!

Super VR Ball

Faxmashine
and blueasis

  • Start by having everyone enable Sound > Extra Voice Range
  • All into the boat's center room! Click to shut off Spring King and set the mode to "Normal" only to save time -- then click Start.
  • Your 2 goals: either get to the end quickest or with the most 🍉
    • Also has achievements on leaderboard's backside!

"Surf" maps - IgbarVonSquid

  • Based on the gameplay in certain custom Counter-Strike maps
  • Slight learning curve, so save for guests that love Mirror's Edge
  • Has a how-to level under the same creator detailing the physics!
  • But 1st try can take some time, so move on when group is ready!
  • Start by grabbing a golf club near spawn, size is up to you
  • Stand on a golf hole's starting pad, click pop-up to drop a ball
  • Desktop: drop, move, re-grab club for angle; ↔ for hit strength
  • VR: Have fun trying to hit it, only Khyaber's won't enrage me \o/

"Putt Putt" maps - Ostinyo

(but--while awesome--I wouldn't exactly call it "beginner friendly" haha)

More Game World Ideas

Recommended by cool people across various communities!
(As such, still needs some desktop-mode + length testing!)

Creativity

can ask "drawing, writing, art gallery, music?"

(mostly a post-game breather up to the gallery's "wow")

Life Drawing
tokki_o

  • Grab a brush, walk to an easel, and press it on there to draw
  • Desktop: rotate brush by holding scroll button + dragging mouse
  • Check the side-room to see what others have made!
  • Genuinely surprises me the accuracy some people have...

VRCWC Library
ELECTR0

  • Head up ramps to the shelves, can actually use and read books!
  • They function somewhat similarly to a tablet reader
  • Some are public domain stories, others written by ELECTR0's club
  • Move along after a nice little gaze out the far window's sea vista

Tanuki Tunes
Juno Tanuki

  • Follow instructions at spawn to use the vinyl record pickups
  • Click door to the right of the vinyl player to access basement
  • Just a world to listen to tunes in with various genres present

Surreal 1️⃣

A D R I F T
M E R C

  • Proceed forward from spawn through the big portal -> main area
  • You may want to figure out its teleport menus prior to the tour
  • VR guests prone to motion sickness should avoid the bus/planes
  • Sights I'd show before moving on: ballpit, piano, and liquid mirror
    • Liquid mirror vs. desktop: hold item to extend arm out first!

Head right out of the first big portal

Up the 2 ramps with capsules at the bottom, then follow below route!

(even has a hub of portals to other meme worlds in the basement...)

Surreal 2️⃣

  • What to do upon entering: explore around until satisfied!
  • Generally trippy visuals, like an art gallery but also a sandbox
  • Probably just avoid the helicopter if prone to motion sickness
  • Able to move on at anytime

Recreating

Hall of Portals
Amaster
Amaster

  • This houses multiple creators' work recreating videogame maps
  • Encouraged to let your guest enter portals for a series they like!
  • Your jump has an increased height to help you get around
  • There are some hidden avatars and rooms higher up

Reimagining

  • Reimagines a fighting game stage into a vast space to explore
  • Use the phonograph to your left on spawn to get on the boat
  • Take path right of spawn to access the bridge up top via big doors
  • Cross the upper bridge to another door to access the other shore
  • Think like Pokemon Snap, but you're able to roam freely
  • Chill hut with several cute Pokemon at the far end from spawn
  • Personally surprised me when I went down into the caves...
  • Able to move on whenever desired by you or your guest(s)

Shaders & Tech

  • Head upstairs to access a menu to enact magic on the skybox
  • Probably just avoid the jetpack pickup if prone to motion sickness
  • Can retell the story of the world as covered in this Dec 2021 video
  • Or how much it's meant to others ex. this user-now-staff member
  • Collection of submissions from amazing technically savvy users
  • After a short entry lobby, can pick any of 3 branching paths
  • Several exhibits can be interacted with to varying degrees
  • Able to move on at any time, took me hours to get through solo

FireTornado
BigChickenLover

  • Spawns you in a cave that you progress forward up out of
  • There's a little green spotlight you can take along if you wish
  • Caverns open to view the titular spectacle, and that's the map
  • But if you keep walking to its center, it'll keep rising you higher!
  • Follow instructions at spawn
  • Grapnel Gun's a relatively quick coin collecting game
  • Zipline's... just fun to zoom around on 🎉

Traversal demos - TORISOUP

Finale Visualizer

(slot in your favorite!)

Everything Goes On
ReddPanda
& Gyle

  • Recommended to swap this finale for your favorite audio world
  • Same rules apply as with the first song visualizer world:
    • Wait for everyone to load in first
    • Whoever loaded in first can use the center orb to begin it
    • Free to leave once the song ends (will look like image)

🎉 You made it! 🎉

Thank you for going through this tour!
At this point, you're welcome to roam freely \o/

(special thanks to my beta testers A, F, K and everyone offering ideas to improve this!)

  • Appreciate how different interests can be shared across VRChat
  • Note the dino world's impact works far, far better in VR scale, but to the point some users new to VR might find it a bit frightening
  • Enter the portals inside the arts and sciences world if interested!

Dinosaur Bones

AstroRabbit

VIRUS LQP-79

  • Implemented through the power of shaders in VRChat
  • Controls laid out in a poster just to the right of the big TV screen
  • Able to move on whenever satisfied, no real end state

The Sphere
CyanLaser

  • Advised to skip if your guest(s) experience motion sickness easily

  • Effectively it remaps your position onto the surface of a sphere
  • ... but on its inside -- very surreal, very dizzying, but blew my mind

m1n0 kotws
VRrOOm

  • Skip this one if sensitive to flashing lights
