As you pursue family history work, you are going to find yourself running into roadblocks, and you are going to say to yourself, “There is nothing else I can do.” When you come to that point, get down on your knees and ask the Lord to open the way, and He will open the way for you...

Heavenly Father loves His children in the spirit world just as much as He loves you and me.

“Sometimes the veil between this life and the life beyond becomes very thin.

Our loved ones who have passed on are not far from us.”

"Don’t underestimate the influence of the deceased in assisting your efforts and the joy of ultimately meeting those you serve."

The bare minimum that we're looking for...

A name: Even just the first name or the last name is sufficient.

A distinguishing date: Even just the year is sufficient. This could be a birth date, death date, marriage date, etc. Any ONE of them is enough to do temple work.

A gender: No temple work may be done without a gender.

A distinguishing place:  Even just the country is sufficient. This could be a birth place, death place, marriage place, etc. Any ONE is enough to do temple work.

Familysearch will guide you through the requirements...

Getting to know the 'Person Page'

(Page 1 of your handout)

Search through the records of the last known person in your tree to find the names of his/her parents, siblings, spouses, and children.

When you can, look at the record images. You might see more info.

Obituaries: Birth date, residences, date/place of death, names of multiple family members.

Marriage records: Usually contain names of the bride and groom's parents, marriage date/place.

Birth certificates: birth date/place, names of the person's parents and, oftentimes, the age of the parents at the child's birth, allowing you to calculate the parents' approximate birth year.

Death certificates: Date/place of death, often names of spouses and children.

Remember, living relatives remember a lot of this information too.

You might find the most success adding to your tree, if you can track down the names of couples—the full name of a husband and his wife's full maiden name—and search for those two people linked together.

  • For more recent ancestors, you can often find obituaries just by searching their names.
