   American River Parkway Stewards

On the second Saturday of each month, we perform cleanups of a mile of the American River Parkway which was adopted by UUSS.

We meet between 8:45-9:00 am in the parking lot, next to the levee, at the end of Northrop Avenue, behind Panera. We’ll sign in, obtain trash bags, and orient new folks.  With a strong turnout, we should be able to do a good job on the UU Mile in one hour, then regather at the stairway at 10:00 for a photograph together… And on to Panera for refreshments and conversation if you wish.

Loaves and Fishes

We meet every month on the 4th Monday of the Month at 1321 North C St.

There are 2 crews: Food Prep and Serving / Cleanup

Food Prep

The Food Prep crew meets at 7:30am.

Duties can be light such as wrapping silverware in napkins, stacking bread slices in boxes, etc. or heavier work such as chopping vegetables, assembling ingredients for lasagna trays, etc.

Most jobs require standing. The length of the shift varies depending on the number of volunteers and the menu.

Sometimes after the shift folks go to to a coffee shop to socialize.

Serving / Cleanup

The Serving / Cleanup crew meets at 10:15am.

Duties include serving food to guests as they go through the line, and cleaning up tables.

We welcome newcomers and are happy to explain the process to you.

Hope to see you soon!

You can host a free movie at UUSS!

St. John’s Program for Real Change

St. John’s Program for Real Change is a special program for woman who are ready to make a change in their life.  The program serves as a shelter/rehabilitation program for homeless and battered women and their children.

We serve dinner the 4th Wednesday of each month, and use the shelter’s kitchen and dining hall to prep/serve dinner.  Our menu is: cheesy tuna noodle casserole, vegetarian casserole, buttered corn, green salad, rolls, fruit, and cookies. We serve between 60-100 people (usually around 70).

When you arrive depends on what you are doing that evening.  We bring all the ingredients for the meal.  The prep crew brings the ingredients for the casseroles, arrives at 4:00 and starts the cooking. We help prep the casseroles, and get the dining room ready.  There are others who bring salad, rolls, and cookies and they arrive between 4:30 and 5:15.  Dinner is served between 5:30 and 5:45, depending on when the casseroles are ready and the shelter’s residents have finished their pre-dinner meeting. We serve cafeteria style, and when dinner is over, you are welcome to stay and help yourself to casserole and whatever else is left over. Shelter residents are assigned clean-up duty, so we just gather our belongings and leave around 6:00-6:15.
