Private links with passwords and expiry

Pro / Team

Private links let you share a presentation while keeping it private. Recipients can open it without a Slides account, and you can add a password or expiration date to control access.

Create separate links for different audiences, track which ones are opened, and disable them independently when you're done sharing.

  1. Open Share from your profile page or the editor.
  2. Select Create private link. If you already have links, select New link to create another.
  3. Give the link a Name so you can recognize it later, such as “Client review” or “Workshop attendees.”
  4. Optionally add a Password, choose an expiration date, or enable an email notification for the first view.
  5. Copy the link and send it to your recipients.

The sharing options also let you choose how the presentation opens, including Fullscreen and Scroll. See Sharing decks for presentation modes and linking to a particular slide.

Private sharing dialog with link access and tracking options

Anyone with an active link can view the deck, including people it is forwarded to. Viewer links do not grant editing access; use collaboration for that.

  • Password: Require a password before viewing. Each link can have its own password. See Password protection.
  • Expiration: Use Automatically disable this link on to choose a date. The link expires at the start of that date in the time zone used when you set it. To allow access through Friday, choose Saturday as the expiration date. New links may inherit an account or team expiration setting.
  • Delete link: Select the trash icon beside a link and confirm Delete. The presentation, other links, and existing collaborator or team access are unaffected.

Understand views and notifications

Each link has its own view count. Creating a separate named link for each audience helps you see which links are being used. The link's settings also show when it was first opened.

Counts do not identify individual viewers, and forwarded links share the same count. Your own views and repeat views from the same network address within a short period are excluded.

Enable Notify me via email the first time this link is opened before sharing for a one-time notification. This option disappears after the first recorded view.

Embed a private deck

To embed a private presentation, open the link's embed options in Share and copy the embed code.

Under Restrict where this deck is embedded, enter an allowed domain, such as example.com, or leave it empty to allow any website. This restricts embedding but still allows the private link to be opened directly.

To disable direct access too, enable This link is only for embedding. (Disables link sharing.) Create a separate link if you also want to share the deck directly.
