How to book resort stays using
Disney Vacation Club (DVC) Points

Duration: 5 minutes

The Morrow family just purchased their first DVC (Disney Vacation Club) point contract.

Morrow Family

They bought a 150 point DVC contract for Bay Lake Tower.

That means they will get 150 DVC points per year until the contract expires in 2060.

They're ready to book their first vacation using DVC points, but they need some help.

"I'm trying to book nights at Bay Lake Tower in a few months but it's ALL BOOKED UP ALREADY."

The Morrow family bought Bay Lake Tower DVC points so their "Home Resort" is Bay Lake Tower.

The Morrow family may book up to 11 months from today's date at their home resort.

You're competing with very few people for rooms in this range so most nights are generally available.

The Morrows are learning they will need to plan ahead more than they used to. At least 8 months in advance.

It's also important to know that you may "waitlist" on any date that is currently sold out within your booking window.

You cannot see how many members are in front of you on the waitlist and if it becomes available it will automatically book the stay without confirming with you.

For the best luck with waitlists it's a good idea to get on the waitlist the day you gain access (usually 7 months out) or as close to it as possible.

"This stay in August requires 170 points but we only have 150, it's asking me to borrow points?"

DVC members have options each year to Bank or Borrow their points.

Banking points is the act of saving them for the next use year.

If you can't or won't use them you can Bank them and they'll be added to your points for the next Use Year.

If you need more points for your trip this year you can borrow just the number you need from next year. You'll just receive less to use next year.

The Morrows want to spend 170  points this year, but they only received 150 points in January.

This January: 150 Points

Next January: 150 Points

They can borrow 20 points from next year. Leaving 130 points to use next year.

This January: 170 Points

Next January: 130 Points

Note that once you borrow points from a future year those points now expire at the end of this year.

This January: 170 Points

Next January: 130 Points

Let's say the Morrows CANNOT vacation this year but they have 150 DVC points that expire 12 months from the day they received them.

This January: 150 Points

Next January: 150 Points

Expire in 12 months.

Instead of letting points expire they could try to rent them to someone else in exchange for $$. OR they can bank those points for next year.

This January: 0 Points

Next January: 300 Points

Expire in 24 months.

IF they find out next year that they cannot vacation AGAIN then they cannot bank the previously banked points again.

This January: 0 Points

Next January: 300 Points

Expire in 24 months.

This January: 0 Points

Next January: 300 Points

Expire in 24 months.

They could bank the 150 points from their current use year but not the 150 points they banked from last year.

IMPORTANT:

This year's points must be banked more than 4 months before they expire... (We know, it can never be easy right?)

The Morrows receive points in January, so they can bank their points from this year anytime before September.

The Morrows check DVCEasy.com to plan out points and understand the true cost of each trip.

There is a lot to learn about buying and spending Disney Vacation Club (DVC) points.

Not surprisingly, the Morrows still have a lot of questions...

"Once we have our points, how do we spend them?"

"Is renting DVC points cheaper than resale?"

"How far in advance can we book?"

"Can we spend our points on other Disney resort stays?"
