I am a data / code monkey, who has developed an appreciation for good beer and good bourbon. I like to hear myself talk, and I'm trying to get better at letting other people hear me, too.
I've been a professional geek for over 20 years, but I still feel like I'm out of my zone. Technology moves so fast. There are so many things to know. Everyone is so much smarter than me. I don't know what I'm doing, and it's just a matter of time before someone finds me out. Or something like that. Imposter Syndrome is a problem. But it can be dealt with.

Bad things happen. Hardware crashes. Software becomes corrupted. Your business gets hit with a ransomware attack. But that's not a problem, because you have backups, right? In the modern world, backups are a necessity. But they're absolutely worthless if you can't also restore them. In this session, I'll talk about the history of backups, some of the reasons you'd want backups, the different types of backups you can perform, and most importantly, the importance of testing those backups with a restore. How good are your backups? How do you know? (Presented at Into The Box 2024 - May 17-18, 2024)
If you're a developer who touches data, you needs to have at least a basic familiarity with SQL querying. In this session, we'll put on our detective hats to solve a mystery while we learn some SQL.

None of us are going to be around forever, but there will be people left behind you. What about them? Presented at PASS Data Community Summit 2022
Early in my dev career, I often (unwittingly) abused my systems. My code didn't care about things like databases or networks, as long as the results were right. I had a cfHammer, and I needed to pound out a solution. I never knew I was an anti-pattern. With the right tools, things work better. (Presented at Into The Box 2020)
TOPIC DESCRIPTION: Early in my dev career, I often (unwittingly) abused my systems. My code didn't care about things like databases or networks, as long as the results were right. I had a cfHammer, and I needed to pound out a solution. I never knew I was an anti-pattern. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: I'm a code monkey who started life as a pilot. I've primarily worked in ColdFusion and SQL, with a smattering of pretty much whatever I've been asked to do. I'm a self-taught guy, and I constantly find new, shiny things that I want to learn more about. I've been doing both the coder and the SQLer things for a while. I know a thing or two. At least I hope I do. Presented at Online ColdFusion Meetup #283 (Feb 2021) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq2t6ulM4hY&list=PLG2EHzEbhy0-QirMKgSxhjkUyTSSTvHjL&index=13
All companies must place some trust in their employees, but bad things can happen when one of those employees breaks that trust. How can you stop an Insider before they do harm. (Presented at Into The Box 2021)
