Question 7 - Looking back on your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

My School Magazine

My Music Magazine

Preliminary Task...

Fireworks

For the preliminary task I created a front cover of a school magazine, this helped me to get used to and experiment with the programme Fireworks however I only knew how to use the programme on a basic level so I was unable to create something of a high standard.

Images

As my image is not of people it doesn't present the school or the people in it in any way which is something I have learnt to do when taking images for my music magazine. When I took these images I put a lot more thought into them as I thought about make up and clothes etc whereas for my school magazine I focused more on objects rather than people which wouldn't appeal to my target audience.

Research and Planning

Through my research and planning I have learnt to follow the conventions of other music magazines and made my work look a lot more professional and more appealing to my target audience as this front cover is boring and probably wouldn't attract the audience that I would be aiming for which is teenagers. As this task is only a front cover I learnt how to make a contents page and double page spread through doing my research into other magazines for example Mixmag.

Final Product..

Fireworks

When making my music magazine my knowledge of Fireworks became better as I learnt how to make my text look better by using the drop box tool, I learnt how to lock things into place so they don't move and how to remove things like white bits from around an image. I have learnt how to magazine look more professional and my final product is a massive improvement from the preliminary task. I chose fonts to suit my target audience rather than just any like in the preliminary task.

Other programmes

By creating my music magazine I have learnt how to use other programmes for the first time and got better at using programmes that I already knew how to use. I learnt how to use and maintain a house style as when making the school magazine I only made a front cover.

Mastheads

I was a lot more creative with my mastheads for my music magazines as I spent a lot of time designing them and coming up with a name for my magazine and the connotations of it, I also thought about what colours would appeal to my audience to represent the genre of music.

Time

As we had more time on our final production I felt as if I could learn from my mistakes and improve my work. It was easier to appeal to a target audience as I did things like questionnaires to find out what they would want from a magazine.
