What do we stand for?

Culture makes work simpler. If we agree on what we stand for, we can trust that others will care about the same things.

Culture increases trust and sets a foundation of behaviours that we can expect from our peers.

Culture matters.

Our culture is built on our values

We codify the behaviors we want to encourage around our values.

We evaluate new hires on these values.
We celebrate behaviours aligned with our values in #kudos

We evaluate each others on these values.

Our values matter.

We'll go over all of our values

We'll also go over behaviours that we celebrate.

Behaviours that help build a great culture on top of our values.

We dream big.

We aim high.

We’re pragmatic about it all.

We're ambitious, but not delusional 🚀

When a colleague shares constructive feedback with us. This is a gift, an opportunity to improve which we all want to do continuously as ambitious people.

And when a colleague listens and cares about our feedback.

We're ambitious, but not delusional 🚀
Behaviours that we celebrate

When a colleague picks up a new skill.

When a colleague rolls up their sleeves to tackle a tough challenge.

When a colleague brings a new idea to the table.

And when a colleague keeps an open mind and is receptive to our new idea.

Paulius has worked closely with Checkout to ensure we make revenue from card transactions. This was not easy to do, required a lot of work and required a lot of pragmatism. We couldn’t just change payment processor. We needed to push Checkout.

Tricia wants us to open up the Tola onboarding gates. Let people sign up, get into the app and then schedule a demo meeting if needed. This is a step towards Product Lead Growth and is an ambitious one. Her approach in defining the quest has been pragmatic, avoiding large reworks and focusing on iteratively getting there.

We're ambitious, but not delusional 🚀
Examples

Everyone at Tola, no matter their role, is expected to build.

Building means creating things that have compounding interest over time. This can be features, tools, best practices, guidelines, educational material or others.

We are builders 🔨

When we ship a new feature

When a colleague fixes a bug

We are builders 🔨
Behaviours that we celebrate

When a colleague creates a helpful new tool

Whenever a colleague does something that will forever make our job just a little bit easier

When a colleague shares a solid demo

When a colleague shows us a better way to build things.

Tom has built the new Tola website. In doing so, he has shown us a better way to implement UI code and is now leading an ambitious RFC to help us get a better grip on our frontend code.

Jakob has started learning React and has started creating small PRs in our codebase. This means he gets to build more, ship with less friction and increases the team’s overall velocity.

Examples

Trevor has stepped outside of his comfort zone to work on the Marketing integrations. This required endurance, hard work and building in an area that’s not necessarily fun to build in but was necessary for Tola.

We recognize that this is a marathon.

We understand this will be hard.

We know we can count on our peers for help and we’re not afraid to be vulnerable and ask for help.

Our peers know that they can count on us to listen and to help.

We are resilient and there for each other 🪨

When a colleague reaches out to ask how we’re doing.

When a colleague opens up and shares their vulnerable side.

We are resilient and there for each other 🪨
Behaviours that we celebrate

When a colleague shows resiliency and determination in the face of a difficult challenge.

When a colleague goes above and beyond for us.

When a colleague is thankful.

Alex has shown a lot of empathy to the team. He doesn’t hesitate to reach out directly to people to check with them on the regular. He’s been consistently able to open up and be vulnerable. Despite being remote and working 3 days a week, he feels close to the entire team. He has also been a key player in the #Feelz sessions!

We are resilient and there for each other 🪨
Examples

We bring high amounts of energy to everything we do.

We keep our cynicism in check.

We are optimistic by default.

We participate without being asked.

We get our peers excited about what we’re working on.

We work hard and we make it fun 🎉

When a colleague brings positivity to work and it makes your day just a little bit easier.

When a colleague keeps an open mind about a new idea or project.

We work hard and we make it fun 🎉

Behaviours that we celebrate

When a colleague makes us smile or laugh.

When a colleague makes an effort to avoid being grumpy or negative.

When a colleague goes through a tough challenge with high spirits and motivation.

When a colleague inspires us.

Sam has recently started sharing photos of his travels. It’s great to see this side of him and it has sparked interesting conversations about his trips and experiences. Sam has a ton of interesting experiences and it’s always a pleasure when he talks about them.

Examples

Bianca and Nic’s enthusiasm on the QuickBooks project has been infectious. Sharing wins, challenge and collaborating in huddles. They’ve been amazing at collaborating across timezones. They also continued their hard work on their BugSlayer duty!

Evan has been a incredible force of positivity. He is consistently joining huddles with a huge smile, bringing stories, anecdotes, comments. He cares about everyone and it shows. He has gone through a lot this year and yet he’s always able to make the team smile and give back 10x the energy he receives.
