Definitions
Data Management
"The development, execution and supervision of plans, policies, programs, and practices that control, protect, deliver, and enhance the value of data and information assets."
Policy
A set of ideas or a plan of what to do in particular situations that has been agreed to officially by a group of people.
The Goal: Boring Data Management
Data Management must be holistic, top down, driven by policy.
Good Data Management is automated, enforced, auditable, open source.
Challenges | Reasons |
---|---|
Leadership | requires vision, ambition, time, money |
Humans | buy-in, follow through, consistency |
Communication | words, consistency, meaning, interoperability |
Process | code, software tools, longevity |
People should make the policy. Computers should execute the policy.
Data management
should be
data-centric and metadata driven.
Future-proof automated data management
requires
open formats and open source.
iRODS Policies
The reflection of real world data management decisions in computer actionable code.
