Moving away from

Mac OS

But why?

Two years ago my computer started to warm like crazy, I lost two days of work, I backed up data, did a fresh install and keep having performance issues.

Docker was slow, I guess me wanting to use Docker for everything made me move away for OS X

Favors

Xubuntu: uses XFE good for computers with few hardware resources, 1-2 Gb of RAM

Ubuntu LTS ( Long Term Support)

The recommended download for almost everyone, including the server version.

Ubuntu, non LTS, latest release 19.10

This Distribution (Distro) is cool if you want to test the bleeding edge stuff they will be incorporating in the future LTS releases.

My Current Hardware

Thanks Chromatic

Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition

  • Comes with ubuntu pre-installed

  • All drivers work out of the box

  • 3 Usb-c connections

  • 2 Thunderbolt

  • 4K touch screen

  • Bluethoot 4.2

  • 16Gb RAM

  • 512 SSD HDD

Software

  • Slack work the same as in Mac OS, just a wrapper for Electron.
  • Chrome, Firefox, Brave as Browsers
  • VS Code, PHPStorm, Sublime run nativelly
  • Docker runs fast, windows needs Hyper-V to work and you need to pay for that feature, on Mac is due to the NFS filesystem

How to install software

You can install software via terminal, using the package managers like snap, apt and apt-get:

snap store

Who should use it?

People that:

  • Wants to learn more about Linux
  • If you want to try something different and not being tied to the Hardware apple provides.
  • There are even tools for design and Free alternatives to photoshop and illustrator, but as Designer it would be harder to move to linux.
  • With tools like BrowserStack and Zeplin even front end developers can use Linux.
