Enduring it All - 2 Timothy 2:10

• Who?

  • The Apostle Paul (1:1) writing to Timothy (1:2) and the church at Ephesus (2:14, 20; 4:19, 22 [you pl])

• What?

  • Strengthen Timothy in the Lord (1:6, 2:1, 3:12; 4:8), encourage him to not be ashamed (1:7, 8-12)

  • Stand strong against suffering (2:3, 22, 25; 3:12)

  • Do not be distracted (1:6; 2:4-6, 14, 16-18, 22-24; 4:3-5, 10)

  • Fight falsehood (2:14, 22, 25; 3:1-8)

  • Learn and preach the Word (1:13; 2:2, 15, 24-25; 3:10, 14, 16-17; 4:2)

  • Faithfulness of God (1:1, 9-14; 2:8, 11-13, 19; 3:11; 4:8, 18)

Enduring it All - 2 Timothy 2:10

• When?

  • ​Written between 61-68 AD.  Probably the last epistle that Paul wrote, possibly a second imprisonment.

• Where?

  • Paul was in Rome (1:17), Timothy in Ephesus (1:16, 18; 4:19).

• Why?

  • Paul longed to see Timothy (1:4), but was in prison (1:9, 16; 2:9)

  • To ask Timothy to come see him (4:9, 21)

• How?

  • By way of Tychicus (4:12), presumably to replace to Timothy at Ephesus.

  • “By the Holy Spirit” (1:14).

Enduring it All - 2 Timothy 2:10

• Who?

  • Paul writing to Timothy, his “child” (2:1) in the faith.  Disciples of Christ, Paul, Timothy in 2:2.  Also, the church that Timothy is serving, “them” in 2:14, 18, 20-21.  The “elect” (2:10).  The false teachers in 2:16-18, 25.

• What?

  • Focus on discipling others (2:2-6)

  • Endure hardship for Christ (2:3, 8-13)

  • Charge the church to not quarrel (2:14-18, 23-24)

  • Study the “word of truth” (2:15)

  • God uses everyone for his own purposes (2:20)

  • Pursue holiness (2:21), righteousness, faith, love, peace (2:22)

  • Be kind, teach (2:24), correct (2:25)

Enduring it All - 2 Timothy 2:10

• When?

  • All the time (2:2), during suffering (2:3), when quarrelling starts (2:14), when temptations come (2:22).

• Where?

  • In the church (2:2, 20-21), in the world (2:3, 22), in prison (2:9), in heaven (2:10).

• Why?

  • To strengthen Timothy (2:1)

  • Encourage him to not be distracted (2:4-6, 14, 16-18, 22-23)

  • Ensure the Word is studied and taught (2:2, 14-15, 24-25)

• How?

  • “...grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2:1)

  • Do not be distracted (2:4-6, 23) & be holy to the Lord (2:21)

  • Consider what Paul has said (2:7)

  • “Remember Jesus Christ” (2:8)

  • Trust in “God’s firm foundation” (2:19)

  • Flee youthful passions (2:22)

  • “...with gentleness” (2:25)

  • “Do your best” (2:15)

• Who? Paul (1:1, 2:10), the elect (2:10)

• What? Enduring everything

• When? All the time

• Where?

  • In prison (2:9)

  • In heaven

• Why? For the elect, that they obtain salvation

• How?

  • The Word of God (2:9)

  • The faithfulness of Christ (2:11-13)
