Ways You Can Learn to Be an Entrepreneur

For many, the idea of working for themselves sounds great but they are unsure whether they have what it takes to succeed. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive list of attributes that defines who or what an entrepreneur actually is. Some people learn the hard way, through trial and error; others just never take the leap at all. In reality, all kinds of people from all walks of life find a way to succeed in launching their own startup. And, what you know now is not the end of the line. Many of the skills and traits that help entrepreneurs succeed can be developed with a little time and effort.

Here are five things by Oleksiy Nesterenko (a startup and business development professional) you can work on now to improve your entrepreneurial skills:

1. Hang out with other entrepreneurs

Whether you want to start a business right away or are unsure if you ever will, spending time with those who have can be very revealing. Pay attention to what they say and how they say it -- the most successful entrepreneurs tend to be relatively optimistic (with a good dose of realistic), they tend to see the bigger picture, and they tend to gather knowledge from every situation. For those who are ready to go out on their own, networking with successful business owners is likely to make you feel inspired and motivated to get going on your own startup.

2. Hone your research and learning skills

Successful entrepreneurs manage risk by increasing knowledge. They know the fundamentals of every aspect of business (accounting, planning, marketing, even IT), they know their product, their market, their industry, and their competition inside and out. They are always looking for new information and synthesizing it with what they already know. This part -- synthesizing information -- can be the toughest to master, but practice goes a long way.

3. Manage your time

Starting a business might mean being your own boss, but it also means you are everything to everybody as well. Unless you manage to secure a hefty startup investment, you will likely be your own accountant, marketing department, salesman, and secretary. This means your time will be stretched to the limits. Develop the habit of managing your time well. Use a calendar and planner, prepare to-do lists and hold yourself accountable for completing tasks on time. Push yourself to accomplish more today than yesterday, and be sure to schedule and keep time for other priorities (family, exercise, and the like).

4. Pay attention to what you see and hear

When you are out and about, pay attention to how other businesses operate. See if you can identify what works and what doesn't. Does your local pizza joint do a good job of upselling or keeping you coming back? Does the florist shop market their products to optimize sales? How's the customer service at your grocery store? Look for the unique selling propositions of the businesses you frequent -- is it clear what makes them a better choice than their competition? The more you learn from those already in business, the less steep your own learning curve will be.

5. Evaluate your attitudes

A huge difference between successful entrepreneurs and the chronic 9-to-5ers can be found in their overall attitudes. Entrepreneurs look at risk as a dragon to be slayed, not as a lucky or unlucky issue. They are generally interested in hearing conflicting perspectives, because those ideas give them new ways to identify innovative processes or untapped opportunities. The lemon into lemonade perspective is a bit trite, but looking at all sides of an issue provides the best chance of finding the right answer.
