How do you talk to users?


1. Understand the user. 
Look for pain points, don't show the product.

2. Open-ended testing

Don't explain the product. Let the user explore and talk out loud.


3. Specific goals 

Ask the user to perform certain tasks.




Learn, don't sell.



Questions:

  • ask open-ended questions (not yes/no questions)
  • avoid leading questions
  • paraphrase the user's response
  • talk about past experience, not future guess

  • don't influence the user (keep a poker face)
  • use silence to get the user to talk
  • follow up on any unusual comments
