RackerTools and RU

Who am I?

  • Jeremy Price
  • Racker since April 2014
  • Software dev / Team lead in Racker Tools
    • Until July 2015
    • Encore Ticketing
  • Technical Trainer in Rackspace University (RU)
    • Focusing on Software Development Curriculum

Why am I here?

  • We have 6 classes in RU that directly target Software Development
    • Only three of those are of use to practicing software developers
    • The other three target folks who want to become software developers
  • I would like your feedback as to what classes we should add

Note: we also have a lot of classes that aren't software development focused like Linux, Windows, Ansible, Salt, project management, etc.

My Vision

  • Maintain two tracks for Rackers that want to learn software development:
    • How to become a software developer
    • How to become a BETTER software developer
  • Some potential classes might overlap tracks

My ask of you

  • Asynchronous feedback
    • What classes should we create/deliver?
    • What classes should we offer more often?
    • Does your team have any training needs?
  • Regular sync ups
    • I will let you know what we have available
    • You provide feedback on past, present, future needs
  • Reach out to me with any training-related questions!

Discussion Questions

  • What tools/technologies/methodologies do your teams current use?
    • Which ones would they/you like to use?
    • Are they proficient in all those?
  • Are there skills beyond just language proficiency that would be of benefit to your teams?
    • CI/CD, RESTful API design, OO design, functional design, distributed systems, microservices architectures, Ansible, UI/UX, best practices...
  • How important is remote-enabled training?
  • Is there a need for a set of "common" developer onboarding classes?

Thanks!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
