Bureaucratic

Bureaucratic leaders:

  • Establish and enforce rules
  • Decisions are final
  • Motivate through discipline and demands immediate compliance
  • Information come from top-down
  • Ineffective vs highly skilled individuals due to micromanagement
  • Effective when choices are to be made in a short amount of time

Examples of Bureaucratic Leaders

  • Adolf Hitler
  • Joseph Stalin

Authoritative

Authoritative leaders:

  • Provide long term direction and focuses on end goals
  • Typically have the most experience than those under them
  • Motivate by inspiring enthusiasm about the project
  • Have a clear direction with set standards
  • Infeffective when "hand holding" is required
  • Effective when a change of direction or vision is requested

Innovative

Innovative leaders:

  • Share a vision with their team of the future and pursues excellence
  • Encourage innovative ideas
  • Motivate through respect of members creativity
  • Invite collaborative conversations
  • Ineffective when risks make team members apprehensive
  • Effective when solving complex problems

Pacesetting

Pacesetting leaders:

  • Expect team members to work fast and embrace new projects
  • Focus on productivity
  • High standards are set from leading by example
  • Communication of detailed instructions are not passed along
  • Ineffective over a long period of time
  • Effective when team members are self motivated and highly skilled

Democratic

Democratic leaders:

  • Rely on consensus decision-making
  • Comfortable with team members taking the lead occasionally
  • Use collaboration and communication to receive input
  • Style is ineffective when time is limited or team members without the knowledge or expertise to add quality contributions
  • Style is effective when all team members have some knowledge to solve a problem

Affiliative

Affiliative leaders:

  • Create a cohesive unit by emphasizing teamwork and harmony
  • Primarily effective with visionary leadership due to focusing on collaborative and emotional needs
  • Motivate through creative positive personal relationships and avoiding conflicts
  • Not effective when giving negative feedback and performance not emphasize
  • Effective when repairing broken trust, increasing morale, and working through stressful circumstances

Coaching

Coaching leaders:

  • Concentrate on preparing team members for the future by building their skills
  • Excel with groups that haven't realized their potential
  • Motivate by challenging the individual
  • Communicate with positive statements to generate a higher gratification
  • Style is less effective when those being coached are hesitant to change
  • Style is effective when in a one-on-one setting and individual is receptive to the close working style

Altruistic

Altruistic leaders:

  • Personalize approach to meet the needs of the team
  • Lead in order to better serve others
  • Motivate by their empowering ethical approach
  • Focus on listening, empathy, and commitment to community
  • Ineffective if not given sufficient time to apply a long term perspective
  • Effective in creating a positive culture and promoting high morale
