The media product we created was a film opening for a teen film . This meant that our main target audience was teenagers.
However, we learnt that there are many different sub-genres for teen films.
For example - comedy, romantic, drama, horror, sci-fi, musicals, action etc.
Also, teen films have specified age certificates.
They varied from PG, 12, 15, 18 etc.
WIDER AUDIENCE
However, adults sometimes watch teen films just as much as teens do. This is because:
It is a way for them to reminisce on the teen they once were.
It allows them to fantasize on how they wish they were as a teen.
It keeps them 'urban' and up to date with youth culture.
Girls have been statistically proven to watch teen movies more than boys do. Therefore most teen films are more likely to appeal to there female clientele.
OUR SUB-GENRE
Our teen film sub-genre was mainly horror. As teens ourselves, we know a lot of teenagers like the build up and gloominess of teen films, this was our focus.
Horror films are often described as 'harmless entertainment.' Nowadays their are a lot of sub-genres that are linked to specific genders.
For example - romantic films are often linked to females and action often linked to males.
We appealed to teens who like thrill.
The most common people who watch teen horror movies are teens who are socially awkward and groups of teens at parties (sleepovers).
SUB-GENRE
To attract our target audience, we stuck to the main conventions of a teen horror film.
For example - a lot of horror films are in black & white, they have gloomy or even heavy music, and have a lot of slow motions moments.
To add the teen part to the horror film. We used the common characters and settings.
For example - popular or peppy girl and outcast.
We used all of these elements to strongly convey an opening of a teen horror film.
OUR KIND OF AUDIENCE
OUR KIND OF AUDIENCe
The Facebook profile was of a 16 year old girl, Ella Black.
She watches a lot of sci-fi, horror films with friends at sleepovers. But also watches a lot of 'Family Guy' and 'American Dad' late at night. (As most teenagers are known to stay up late.)
She reads one of the most common teen books 'Harry Potter.'
Also enjoys social networking and conveys the common likes of a typical teenager.
Ella is the typical type of teenager we are targeting.
