It's not all just software development

'How big is the "Research Software Community"?'

Damnit Jim I'm a physicist not a social scientist

Damnit Neil I'm a physicist not a social scientist

Results

  • 92% of academics use research software

  • 69% say that their research would not be practical without it

  • 56% develop their own software (worryingly, 21% of those have no training in software development)

  • 70% of male researchers develop their own software, and only 30% of female researchers do so

About 1/3 of RCUK budget invested in software-reliant research

About 7% of jobs.ac.uk involves software development

And finally...

...never email 15,000 researchers
