in

education data

the inherent problem

systems embed commands

education is a process of becoming

10 years 10 seconds

the visualisation is the easy part

where's the data?

the deep problem is time

  • we inhabit many contexts
  • that change as we become
  • our systems focus on current need
  • we've internalised the assumptions of our systems

we're all generators now

we leave a trail

but only a broken signal

Dataception!

showers not streams

when the data is sparse we fail as organisations

  • information needs to be rich:
    • Information richness is defined as the ability of information to change understanding within a time interval
  • Set goals, then look for data to support; confirmation bias, hunt & peck
  • Uncertainty Absorption:
    • Uncertainty absorption takes place when inferences are drawn from a body of evidence and the inferences, instead of the evidence itself, are then communicated.
  • The fact that certain information is regularly collected focuses the organization's attention on it. The collection of certain information occupies the time and attention of the organization, which necessarily restricts the time and attention elsewhere.

one solution

it's all a bit rubbish

the clickstream and the fire-hose are commodities now

now I have another problem

capture events not commands

make rich through standards

make useful with identifiers

...your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should...

if...

  • we support the emergence of the hubs pattern
  • that allows the market to provide & innovate
  • that delivers rich information
  • because it's based on standards
  • since we can capture events at scale
  • but embed privacy controls
  • exploit robust identifiers
  • but maintain local control

then...
