  • Lossy Image format
  • Compresses image
  • Smallest file size
  • Flat image
  • Image artifacts possible

.GIF

  • Allows for animation via frames
  • Supports up to 255 colors
  • Great for images with large
    fields of flat colors
  • Flat image, may contain transparency
  • No going back

.png

  • The best of both JPG and GIF
  • Smaller file sizes with no loss in quality
  • Flat image, may contain transparency
  • Meant to replace GIFs

.tiff

  • No loss in image quality
  • Typically creates larger files
  • Preserves certain native attributes,
    like layers, transparency
  • Used mostly in print, never web

.PSD

  • Native Photoshop file
  • Preserves every special attribute
  • Openly opens in Photoshop
  • Extremely large file sizes,
    since all layers, channels, effects,
    etc. are preserved

.PDF

  • Best for sending proofs
  • Ability to determine how
    image is compressed, if at all
  • Most portable file: opens on
    nearly all operating systems
  • Mostly used in print

.raw & .dng

  • Most raw version of an image
  • Straight from the hi-def camera
  • Allows more precise editing
    before even being opened
    in Photoshop
  • These are the holy grail of images
  • Nothing compressed about 'em
