E. Lockhart is a pseudonym for Emily Jenkins, an American writer and literature professor. Lockhart is her grandmother's maiden name that Jenkins uses when she writes for a Young Adult audience. She has also published children's books and two novels for adults under her own name.
As E. Lockhart, she has been nominated for several awards for her books We were liars and The disreputable history of Frankie Landau-Banks.
The plot centers around a group of students on the prestigious boarding school Alabaster on the American east coast. Alabaster is a prep school,
a high school for future Ivy league students.
The main character in the book is Frankie, who is a sophomore on Alabaster. She discovers a secret society at school and decides to infiltrate the group.
Frankie is a student of Alabaster High, a shy and nerdy girl who is mostly invisible.
When she returns to school from summer break after freshman year, she has transformed from invisible to a proper knock-out. That catches the interest of Matthew Livingstone, an older and very popular boy who never even glanced at Frankie before. They become a couple and it doesn’t take long for Frankie to start suspecting that Matthew is involved in some sort of secret society at school. The same society it turns out, that Frankie’s own dad used to be a member of when he was in high school. Since Frankie is a girl, she is not allowed in the secret club which prompts her to try and infiltrate them. She is going to show them that she is more than just a pretty girl or someone’s girlfriend.
The book takes place in a fictional prep school Alabaster High, located somewhere on the east coast of America. Probably around the Ivy League belt on the northern part of the east coast.
