Comics marry art and language in a way unique to the medium. Whether you’re a fan or not, have you considered using comics in your teaching, in communicating your research, or in engaging with your community? We’ll talk about the practical application of comics, how they “work,” and why you might want to give them a try.

Do you remember how a boring concept suddenly became interesting and memorable because someone used a real life story to demonstrate its relevance? Storyboards are a way to communicate these ideas in a few (4-6) frames of graphic storytelling. In the studio this week we dive into visual storytelling and the process of creating sequenced images. Commonly used for video production, these techniques can be easily adapted to your powerpoint presentations, infographics, zines and comics.

In a world of information overload, visual communication can be a powerful means of making your content more accessible and engaging to learners. In this hands on workshop, you will experience some basic drawing exercises and explore strategies for applying them to lightboard video creation and other visual media. Storyboarding is about creating visual roadmaps to guide each phase of a production process. It is an essential part of video and audio creation, and it’s a practice that can bring clarity and order to any other project you are working on. This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the process of turning a storyboard into a finished asset for teaching. Using the storyboard you create in along with a lightboard and video/audio technology, you will record a live drawing performance to create an instructional or “explainer” video for your course or presentation. You will also have the opportunity to enhance your drawing skills in a variety of physical and digital formats.

Educational Technologies: Facilitating Learning Online
In online and distance learning we often hear complaints from students about the lack of engagement and interaction. A simple way to add teacher presence is to create a “talking head” style video, but these can lack visual interest. A relatively new way to merge the benefits of a face-to-face conversation feel, with the hand drawn support from the instructor is to use a light board. Light boards are situated between the instructor and camera, allowing the instructor to teach in the traditional way as if they had a white board, but still face the audience via the camera.
