Altbier

  • "Old"
  • Dusseldorf
  • Think of it as a German "Pale Ale" or "Amber"
    • Half cousin to Steam Beer
  • Amber/Copper Colored
  • Brightly hoppy with German/Noble varieties.
  • Like Kolsch, it is brewed with an ale yeast at cool temps.

Altbier

  • Dusseldorf is the "home base" of the style
    • 4.3-5.5%, 25-50 IBUS
    • Diebels, Schlösser, Uerige
  • Northern German Altbier - less bitter, malt character is more pils focused with color from a splash of roast
    • 4.5-5.2%, 25-40 IBUS
    • "bitter brown lager"
    • Alaskan Amber, DAB Traditional, Grolsch Amber

Altbier

And the hombrewers favorite

  • Sticke/Doppelsticke Alt
    • Stronger - 6.1for Sticke, 8.5 for Doppel (both Zum Uerige)
    • Think English Barleywine associations
