Critical Review & Analysis
assignment:
Critital Review & Analysis
1 - find TWO academic articles
2 - find ONE news article
...about an "Indigenous issue in Canada"
For example, topics related to:
Indigenous rights, activisms, justice, sovereignty, self-determination, governance, expertise, knowledges, cultures, identities, education, languages, lands, territories, resources, health & wellness, representations, participation, politics... in what we now call Canada
From your assignment description:
- DO start with something you already know: an article, author, topic...
-
DO try to pick a topic which you understood well in class. BUT:
remain flexible and be prepared to switch topics if needed - DO pick articles with long bibliographies (though this alone won't always work)
- DO pick articles that are identified as scholarly/peer reviewed in Sofia or other article databases (though this alone won't always work)
- DO pick articles with identified sections, such as abstract, methods, discussion, results.
- DO give yourself time: it may take several tries to find articles that fit.
Finding an academic article
dos & don'ts: DOs
- DON'T pick a book review, editorial or column
- DON'T pick an article that is shorter than ?15 pages
- DON'T pick an article without a long bibliography
- DON'T pick an article published before 2013
- DON'T pick an article that is not in a peer-reviewed journal
- DON'T pick two articles by the same author or in the same journal
- DON'T pick an article that is not relevant to Indigenous contexts or topics
- DON'T rigidly stick to your first chosen topic
- DON'T be surprised if you find lots of great references that do not qualify as an academic/peer-reviewed article.
Finding an academic article
dos & don'ts: DON'Ts

how can you find the PDFs?
(or the full text of the articles)
paste the title into Sofia!

YOU CAN ALSO TRY
BROWSING JOURNALS
your library assignment guide:
how will you know which article(s) is/are
academic & appropriate
for the critical review assignment?
TEST YOURSELF:
evaluating what you find
which, if either, of these two articles from my
Google Scholar search is academic/peer-reviewed?
is this article academic/peer-reviewed?
is this article academic/peer-reviewed?
is this article academic/peer-reviewed?
is this article academic/peer-reviewed?
what about
this next one?
[test yourself again, on your own]
answers....
NO. Though part of a peer-reviewed JOURNAL, this does not qualify as an academic/peer-reviewed ARTICLE. It is a short editorial/news segment. Most important indications that it is NOT an academic article: only 2 pages, no bibliography. This article could be useful as an added source to help with the review assignment. It also is not published by a recognized news organization or newspaper so does NOT qualify as the required news article either.
is this article academic/peer-reviewed?
This IS an appropriate academic article in a peer-reviewed journal. Important clues: academic language, specific sections including abstract and more, long bibliography of references.
is this article academic/peer-reviewed?
find a news article

-
DON'T select an article older than 5 years
- DO select from legacy/traditional news sources
