What?
- Scalar is an open source project based in the University of Southern California
- Platform designed to let you create a full-fledged digital publication
What can you do with Scalar?
Integrate commentary, explanations, and source information with your essay
Annotate video, images, and other embedded media
Use page layout to communicate different kinds of points
Allow readers to navigate your work in multiple ways

How do you use Scalar?
Register here. Email your username (full name) to selichk1@swarthmore.edu. Simon will add you to the Scalar book for this course.
Get comfortable:
- Add a new page. Give it a title (e.g. "name's test page").
- Add some text.
- Change Page Visibility from Visible to Hidden.
(Scroll down to the Properties tab.) - Save changes. (do this often!)

Next steps
Editing your test page
- Open the editing view for your page (pencil icon)
- Add an image, either from your computer or from online.
- Save and view.
- Change the layout (layout options; some layout ideas). Save.
- Make small changes, see how they turn out. Look at the help documentation.
Connect multiple pages
- Create a 2nd test page. Save.

Create a Path to link the two pages together.
Note: Pages must be set to Visible in order for paths to appear.
You can hide them again after testing it out.
