Insiders are terrible teachers.

"Not knowing about all the [software] tools available made me feel like I’ve been running this long with my hands tied behind my back."

It's not an intelligence problem

It's an language problem

Paragraphs are the building blocks of papers.

Paragraphs are the building blocks of papers. Many students define paragraphs in terms of length: a paragraph is a group of at least five sentences, a paragraph is half a page long, etc. In reality, though, the unity and coherence of ideas among sentences is what constitutes a paragraph. A paragraph is defined as “a group of sentences or a single sentence that forms a unit” (Lunsford and Connors 116). Length and appearance do not determine whether a section in a paper is a paragraph.

How do we approach the problem?

The Map is not the Territory

🧰

The map of reality is not reality. Even the best maps are imperfect. That’s because they are reductions of what they represent.

" An iPad is like a big Iphone".

" An iPad is like a big Iphone".

"An algorithm is a finite sequence of well-defined, computer-implementable instructions, typically to solve a class of problems or to perform a computation."

We only know 10 digits yet we can count to infinity?

Not only are they great for simplifying, they are great learning tools.

Different map,

different scale,

just as effective

"Bad Maps"

" An iPad is like a big Iphone".

What does the internet look like?

How does it work?

Can it go down?

How do I make a website?

How do I make a website?

What is the cloud?

Where exactly is my information?

Maps can help us to better ;)

Should I build a website myself, or use SquareSpace?

"it broke"

" Well, what broke"

"I'm not sure, it was working but now it's not"

"What's it"

"my computer"

“What did you do before it broke?”

“Nothing it just stopped working”

🔑 No Pronouns

It forces you to use the language

"it broke"

" Well, what broke"

"I'm not sure, it was working but now it's not"

"What's it"

"my computer"

“What did you do before it broke?”

“Nothing it just stopped working”

Communciating this language is super important to help us build the future better

1. Pay attention to the words you're using

3 Rules

2. Build maps, not complex diagrams

3. Keep building better maps
