dial tone for education data

Standard, consistent, timely, reliable data everywhere.

Analytics, AI, blockchain, personalised learning, strategic innovation,.........

Are we nearly there yet?

Are we nearly where, yet?

The habits we pick up in school no longer create economic value.

-William Treseder, July 2017

The Knowledge Economy

demands continual

adaptation to change

What you've learned will matter

far less than how well

you've learned to learn

The new focus

isn't digital

it's cognitive

I need

to be

understood

I need

to be

the most

effective

I can be

learners

teachers

the datas will surely help us...

...but not if we lose context

...not if the data drives, not serves

What would the

uber-ification of education

look like?

  • hyper-individual
  • task leads on to task
  • chosen by expert algorithms
  • a sort of freedom
  • only systems know the aggregate
  • am I learning to learn
  • what's the context
  • the gig-economy

...no really, what would that look like

  • select the curriculum framework
  • choose the learning progressions
  • find aligned resources
  • create aligned assessments
  • generate aligned rubrics
  • wrangle with results
  • summarise & report against the criteria
  • share the summary

the good news is we can automate this

the bad news is if we do it the wrong way we remove agency and effectiveness

think backwards

or we're just going to make a

shit sandwich

twice as fast

Working backwards starts with the goals and outcomes rather than requirements and constraints.

Thinking Forwards Thinking Backards
Confirmation of what we already think we know Discovery of what we don't know we don't know
Optimization of what we already have/do Opportunity of doing new things in new ways
Brittle Adaptable
Constraints & requirements  Possibilities
Where are we right?  Where are we wrong?

Starting with the goals & outcomes

how can we apply new possibilities

I need

to be

understood

I need

to be

the most

effective

I can be

using the dial tone...

don't make shit sandwiches faster

be relentlessly backwards in your thinking

Are we nearly there yet?
