Implementing LCGFT

  • LC has not yet decided when it will implement LCGFT in new cataloging
  • We are beginning to see LCGFT terms on copy records
  • TCNJ Library will implement LCGFT on a very limited basis; LCGFT terms (including 655 fields in general) on copy records will be monitored and verified by librarians/LTI

LCGFT: General Terms

  • LC approved 175 "general" terms to add to LCGFT last year
  • Many terms have corresponding, if perhaps slightly different, headings or form subdivisions in LCSH
    • LCSH: $v Biography     LCGFT: Biographies
    • LCSH: $v Congresses   LCGFT: Conference papers and proceedings
    • LCSH: $v Handbooks, manuals, etc.                 LCGFT: Handbooks and manuals
    • LCSH: $v Periodicals    LCGFT: Serial publications
  • All LCGFT general terms are in the plural form

LCGFT General Terms: 10 Broadest Terms

  • Commemorative works; Creative nonfiction; Derivative works; Discursive works; Ephemera; Illustrated works; Informational works; Instructional and educational works; Recreational works; Tactile works

LCGFT for Literary Works

  • LC approved about 380 terms to add to LCGFT last year
  • Literature is the top term. Narrower terms mostly fall under five main terms:
    • Comics (Graphic works); Drama; Fiction; Folk literature; Poetry
  • Many LCGFT terms have corresponding, if slightly different, headings in LCSH
    • LCSH: Adventure stories     LCGFT: Adventure fiction
    • LCSH: Horror tales     LCGFT: Horror ficion
