August 4, 2015

What Is BIBFRAME?

  • "Bibliographic Framework Initiative" (since 2012)
  • Replacement for MARC formats
  • New general data model for expressing and connecting bibliographic data on the Web
  • Based on the Semantic Web/Linked Data model

Why BIBFRAME?

  • MARC's limitations for RDA implementation
  • Integrating library data with the Web to increase visibility and usage

What Is the Semantic Web/Linked Data?

  • Classic Web: "Web of (HTML) Documents"
  • Semantic Web: "Web of Data"
  • Linked Data: Techniques for making data and relationships available on the Web in a standard format that is reachable and manageable by Semantic Web tools
    • URI (vs. text strings in the classic Web)
    • RDF (Resource Description Framework)

Semantic Web/Linked Data Model

  • RDF triple--statement linking one data to another
    • Subject -> Predicate -> Object
    • Shakespeare -> is author of -> Hamlet
    • http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095332 -> http://bibframe/auth -> http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80008522
