Staying relevant requires learning. All education is about
making people curious.
We are going to learn about learning.
When we talk about learning, ask yourselves:
Discuss amongst yourselves, the reasons why learning or 'embodying knowledge' is valuable. Write a short paragraph in your notebooks and read to class.

Don't be afraid it won't be perfect. The only thing to be afraid of, really, is that it won't be. -Company
Procrastination. Let's talk.
What seems to happen when you procrastinate is this:
You look at something you'd really rather not do, and you actually feel a physical pain in the part of your brain that analyses pain. (Dr. Barbara Oakley 2014). LINK [10:00 onwards]
There are two ways that you can handle this:
~Shh. Secret option. Maybe, somehow, sometime, anyhow, be able to make it something you'd like to do.

When we are developing an essay we are taking an idea [created or discovered], bolstering it with evidence [contextualising, researching, experimenting] to create a case for said idea [arguments, rules and practices]. There are multiple ways to attack this new entity, [greek fallacies informal/formal] whether it survives the onslaught is dependant on how well you have prepared your fledgling young idea into battle.
Straw Man - Bandwagon - Appeal To Authority - False Dilemma - Hasty Generalisation - Slothful Induction - Correlation/Causation - Anecdotal Evidence - Texas Sharpshooter - Middle Ground - Burden Of Proof - Personal Incredulity - "No True Scotsman" - To quoque. Definitions > LINK

Taking notes isn't a compulsory part of learning. It is a tool to assist learning.
You are not a copyist, nor an interpreter [yet]. You are trying to talk to your brain, in an open, honest fashion, about what you know, who you are, what challenges you right now, what bores and interests you, how to get this lecture to stop etc.
Note taking can exist in many forms. In writing, in audio recordings, in mind maps & graphs, in doodles, in frequent discussion, in questions that you ask your peers and lecturers. Think curiosity breeding.
What follows is my attempt at note taking Week 1's lecture. A rather simplistic, nostalgic effort.
To give the devil his due holds more good than not.

Spend 10 minutes upgrading your thoughts.
Write down some of the questions that you have created for yourself or from the lecture on a piece of paper.
Attempt to answer them in as much detail as you can.
i.e.: Do I procrastinate? If so what can I do about it?
