Before 1841, a pharmacist was not required to take
examinations or register themselves with any organisation.
They simply learned their trade through a period of
apprenticeship in a pharmacy business.
1841. Foundation of the Pharmaceutical Society
From the foundation of the Pharmaceutical Society in 1841 until the present day, pharmacists have joined the organisation. Initially membership was voluntary, but from 1869 onwards pharmacists had to register with the Society.
