The genetic disorder I am studying is called the sickle cell disease.
- It is also know as the sickle cell anemia.
Features of the Sickle Cell Disease
The SCD (Sickle Cell Disease) is a disease of the hemoglobin. In SCD, defective hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to become stiff instead of flexible.
The Sickle Cell disease affects the people who have it by causing severe pain, strokes, heart attacks, tiredness, and infections.
The likelihood of the Sickle Cell Disease
The SCD is inherited from your parents so it depends on their blood cells on how likely it is for you to inherit it. Although, it is more likely for people of African American descant to get it, it is possible for anyone to get it.
Approximately 70,000 - 100,000 people in the United States have sickle cell disease and 3 million have the sickle cell trait.
The SCD is called a recessive condition because you must have two copies of the sickle hemoglobin gene to have the disease.
The treatment for the Sickle Cell Disease
Treatments for the SCD include bone marrow transplant, supplemental oxygen, as well as treatment medications.
People cope with SCD by exercising daily and getting a lot of rest.
Overall Conclusion of the Sickle Cell Disease
The Sickle Cell Disease is a disease that is inherited through parents and is given to a child at birth. It can be gotten rid of through bone marrow transplant but because it is hard to find a donor for that transplant people prefer exercise.
