What is a Sustainable Digital Scholarly Edition

– And Why Do We Care?

So many DSEs...!

A Scholarly Digital Edition is...

A scholarly edition is the critical representation of historic documents.

Sahle (2016)

  • Critical
  • Represenation
  • Historic Documents

A Scholarly Digital Edition is...

Scholarly digital editions are scholarly editions that are guided by a digital paradigm in their theory, method and practice.

Sahle (2016)

  • Multimediality

  • Hypertextuality

  • Fluidity of Presenation and Publication

  • Multifunctionality

  • Transmedialisation

A Scholarly Digital Edition is...

The most important task for the editor is the creation of information as rich, accurate and reliable data.

Sahle (2013)

  1. The "digital paradigm" can be thought of as modelling information about one or several historical documents as rich, accurate and reliable data, i.e. a TEI XML file.
  2. The "scholarly" part is tied to the selection, modelling, and annotation of data and the authority that comes with the editor or the institution behind it
  3. The edition part is tied to publication and, at least, the temporarily user-selected or pre-selected presentation as a derivative of the data: an interest-led view on a historical document.

Look at Sahle's (2016) definitions of 'Scholarly Edition'

A scholary edition is the critical representation of historic documents.

and 'Digital Scholarly Edition'

Digital Scholarly Editions are scholarly editions that are guided by a digital paradigm in their theory, method and practice and cannot – or can hardly – be given in print without significant loss of content and functionality.
