  • Would you read a self-help book, newspaper or magazine?
  • Would you phone a help line or  an expert?

  1.  In pairs, choose one of the topics you know something about.
  2. Think of advice which could go on the page.
  3. Write headings for at least one tip.
  4. plan information for under the headings (detail, reasons, examples, etc.)
  5. Share ideas with others.
  6. Write your texts together.

Grammar | Verb + Object + Gerund or Infinitive?

  • Mark the sentences as grammatically correct or incorrect.
  • I want to help you
  • I advise going to the doctor
    • Some verbs followed by the gerund,
      some by the infinitive.
  • She advised him not to travel by train
  • We expect the flight to arrive at 7:50
  • It took us long to get there
    • verb + object + Infinitive
    • advise, allow, ask , beg, cause, enable, encourage, expect, force, help, intend, invite, mean, order, persuade, recommend, remind, take [time], teach, tell, warn, etc.
      • He advised me to go to the doctor OR
      • He advised that I go to the doctor.
  • I'm waiting for my friend to arrive. (j'attends que mon ami...)
  • We've arranged for a taxi to pick us up.
    • Remember: Some verbs can take for before the object
  • He made me feel so uncomfortable.
    • make someone, let someone, help someone followed by base verb only
  • I dislike (something) people telling me what to do!
    • Some verbs, like dislike, hate, imagine, involve, keep, mind, prevent, remember, risk and stop use the structure verb + object + gerund.
