Short adjectives (1 syllable, OR -y)

  • tall -> taller than
  • short -> shorter than
  • long -> longer than
  • easy -> easier than

Long adjectives (> 1 syllable, OR -ed), Adverbs (NOT fast / hard)

  • successful -> more successful than
  • helpful -> more helpful than
  • encouraging -> more encouraging than
  • stressed -> more stressed than

 

Exceptions:

  • Good / Well -> Better than. Bad / Badly -> Worse than. far -> further than

Comparative + than

  • Max is stronger than Matt.

 

less + adjective / adverb + than

  • Max is less happy than Matt.

 

(not) as + adjective/ adverb + as

  • Max is as strong as Matthew (same)

 

  • Max is not as happy as Matt = Max is less happy = Matt is happier.

 

  • Note: Modifiers, e.g. He is MUCH better than me. (much, very much, far, a little, a bit, a lot, any, no, even, still)

  • stressed -> the most stressed

 

Exceptions:

  • Good / Well -> the best. Bad / Badly -> the worst. far -> the furthest

Possible debate topics:

  • Fast food and the sugar industry are to blame for obesity, not the helpless obese individuals themselves.
  • France has a problem with immigration (/or not).
  • France has a problem with racism (/or not).
  • I would rather be really short (< 130cm) / really tall (>300cm).
  • McDonalds is better than Quick (/ or not).
  • It is necessary (/or not) to speak English to be successful
  • Tap water is better than bottled water.
  • Children should be paid to work at school.
  • "Energy drinks" should be banned in France.
  • Smoking should be banned in public spaces, just like sex.
  • The police are useless at resolving crime, communities should take control.
  • Parents who have a lack of control over their children, should lose their right to parent.
