Ink Drawing
Critique
I chose Pablo Jurado Ruiz as my inspiration for this project. he was born in Málaga, Spain, in 1973. He is an ink artist that utilizes the technique of pointillism, also known as stippling. The majority of his work features portraits of little girls, and that's what made him stand out to me. The fact that he can create such realistic works composed entirely of minuscule dots is fascinating, and I want to provide the viewer with that same work in my creation.
This work is based off of a picture of my sister and me in our car during a road trip. I'm fairly certain we were coming back from Colorado (our clothing is indicative of a cold destination) and we were getting close to home. I chose this picture because of the story behind it; I have always loved to travel, and have been doing it ever since I was little. This picture represents the numerous adventures my sister and I have been on, and the expressions on our faces were too funny not to do!
Critique (Cont.)
I used the principles of unity and balance in my work. I expressed balance with the placement of my sister and I; our heads are relatively evenly spaced, and while I'm wearing a striped sweater, my sister is wearing a puffy, white coat. I tried to convey unity with the use of pointillism. I made a base layer of evenly spaced dots to set the shade of the object I was working on, then filled in details such as shadows and textures. I also took care to place the dots in a directional manner; I was especially careful with our hair and my sweater.
