Spectrum

A spectrum is a useful tool to show us

how varied expressions of something are.

There is no better side or worse just a

sliding scale.

Biological gender

Gender identity

Gender is assigned at birth

by a doctor!

The doctor checks how many fingers and toes the baby has and what they have between the legs.

You are born either male or female, right?

Well, no.

Gender is a spectrum

Male

Female

Intersex

About 20 children in Sweden are

born each year who are intersex.

Gender is chromosomal, hormonal and anatomical!

The development of the foetus

In week 9 the foetus is as big as a strawberry

At 9 weeks  we can see for the first time

if the foetus has  male or female genitalia.

Nipples seems to be in the "starter pack" for humans the same as arms and legs.

The development of the foetus

Every human recieves a set of genes from their father and their mother.

50-60 genes

800-900 genes

Ovum

Sperm

XX

XY

The foetus gets one set of chromosomes from its parents.

One of the Xs gets inactivated.

Sometimes.

In week 7 the change begins. If your last chromosal pair contains a Y there will be testicles, if it ends in a X there will be ovaries.

So, everybody with a Y is a boy?

No, there are variants.

So many variants!

There are chromosomal variants,

hormonal variants

and

anatomical variants.

Male and female gentialia are more alike than you might think.

This has to do with foetal development.

Who gets to decide?

Some gender variants don't show up until puberty or isn't discovered until infertility becomes an issue.

Does the doctor decide?

or the Parents?

It has to be the individual who decides?

Right?

Masculine and feminine

The binary way of thinking is thought to have come about when sexuality was medicalized in the 19th century.

Nonbinary is a spectrum of gender identities.
An individuals internal sense of themselves as far as gender identity goes. This is different from gender role and gender expression.

Gender expression

Gender expression is how a person portray themselves.

For instance through what they wear, how they prefer their hair, use of make-up etc.

Gender role is the collection of behaviors and activities that society expects to be associated with a particular gender, in this place and time.

"It is not natural..."

If we by "natural" mean what is found in nature, homosexuality has been found in 1500 species of animal. Ranging from "one night stands" to lifelong partnership.

"It is a choice..."

It is NOT a choice!

There are different theories to why

(most of them genetic)

but we can clearly see that sexuality and gender variants are naturally occuring in not just our species but in others.

Sexual preferences are well established before puberty in most cases.

"It is a sin..."

The holy texts of many religions were written in specific historical contexts and by specific people, and can be interpreted in many ways.

There are religions that revere

and accomodate for same-sex relationships.

And religions who take no stance in who people fancy or sleep with.

"It is a sin..."

Leviticus also bans eating pork and shellfish, getting tattoos, mixing different fabrics, etc.

“‘Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material."
