Bias and reliability
Biased information is information that is written from a particular perspective, point of view or opinion.
Reliability is how trustworthy something is or how accurate it is.
is it a 'zombie' page?
Confused? Being a 'zombie' means is it is no longer updated and is highly out of date. As you can still access it it's 'alive', but 'dead' as it's out of date.
What is the purpose?
Why has the person/organisation made it?
Was it just for attention? To help others, information-wise? Or just out to get someone? Keep this in mind when searching the web.
Unless there is something alarming or inappropriate to note, just exit the website and move on to a more suitable site. If something alarms you, tell a trustworthy adult, before anything else.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
How can you tell?
There are a number of ways to tell, here are a few:
- Look at the source-who produced it?
- Could it be bias-are they fact or opinion?
- When was it made-is it out of date?
Who made it?
Look at either the top or bottom of the web page. It should say who made it, necessary qualifications and any contact details. If the name seems suspicious of cryptic, be wary.
How is the website set out? Can you get around easily? Is it current/up to date? Are there any links? If so, are they credible? Is there any obvious spelling mistakes?
WHAT'S THE ORGANISATION LIKE?
Is there a copyright?
Have a look. Is there a copyright symbol anywhere? If there is, who does own it? Are they suspicious?
