The Godhead

Q: How can I help others learn about Heavenly Father?

What do we believe about Heavenly Father?

Have you ever talked about Heavenly Father with your friends?

Scriptures:

God Is Our Loving

Heavenly Father

God is our Heavenly Father. We are His children. He has a body of flesh and bone that is glorified and perfected. He loves us. He weeps with us when we suffer and rejoices when we do what is right. He wants to communicate with us, and we can communicate with Him through sincere prayer.

~Preach My Gospel

God the Father

God the Father is the Supreme Being in whom we believe and whom we worship. He is the ultimate Creator, Ruler, and Preserver of all things. He is perfect, has all power, and knows all things. He “has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s” (D&C 130:22)

Coming to Know God the Father

As children of God, we have a special relationship with
Him, setting us apart from all His other creations. Seek to
know your Father in Heaven. He loves you, and He has given
you the precious opportunity to draw near to Him as you
pray. Your prayers, offered in humility and sincerity, are
heard and answered.

You draw near to God the Father as you study the scriptures and the words of latter-day prophets and as you give
service. When you follow God’s will and live as He would
have you live, you become more like Him and His Son. You
prepare yourself to return to live in Their presence.

Q: How does the Holy Ghost help me teach the gospel?

When have you felt the Spirit (during class, sacrament,

or F.H.E.)? What did it feel like?

What does it mean to teach by the Spirit?

Why is it important to teach by the Spirit?

How does the Spirit bless us as teachers?

How does the Spirit bless those we teach?

What should we do to invite the Spirit in our teaching?

Who is the Holy Ghost?

The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead . He is a personage of spirit, without a body of flesh and bones.

He is often referred to as:

  • the Spirit
  • the Holy Spirit
  • the Spirit of God
  • the Spirit of the Lord
  • the Comforter (John 14:26)

Scriptures:

  • John 15:26 ; D&C 50:13–22 ; 52:9
    • (The Comforter is sent to teach the truth)
  • 2 Nephi 33:1–2
    • (The Holy Ghost carries our words unto the hearts of the children of men)
  • Alma 17:3
    • (The sons of Mosiah prepared themselves to teach with power and authority of God)
  • D&C 11:21 ; 84:85
    • (The Spirit will help us know what to say if we seek to obtain God’s word)
  • D&C 42:11–17
    • (If we do not have the Spirit, we shall not teach)

Roles of the Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost works in perfect unity with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, fulfilling several roles to help us live righteously and receive the blessings of the gospel.

He “witnesses of the Father and the Son” (2 Nephi 31:18) and reveals and teaches “the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:5).

We can receive a sure testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ only by the power of the Holy Ghost. His communication to our spirit carries far more certainty than any communication we can receive through our natural senses.

(1 Nephi 17:45-47)

As we strive to stay on the path that leads to eternal life, the Holy Ghost can guide us in our decisions and protect us from physical and spiritual danger.

The Gift of the Holy Ghost

All honest seekers of the truth can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost, leading them to Jesus Christ and His gospel. However, the fulness of the blessings given through the Holy Ghost are available only to those who receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and remain worthy.

The gift of the Holy Ghost is different from the influence of the Holy Ghost. Before baptism, a person can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost from time to time and through that influence can receive a testimony of the truth. After receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, a person has the right to the constant companionship of that member of the Godhead if he or she keeps the commandments.

As we teach the gospel, we should humbly recognize that the Holy Ghost is the true teacher. We should live worthy to receive the Spirit, pray for His guidance as we prepare and teach, and create an atmosphere in which those we teach can feel His influence.
~Elder Dallin H. Oaks

Holy Ghost

~Matthew O. Richardson

First, the Holy Ghost teaches individuals in a very personal way. The Spirit teaches truth “line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little.”

Second, the Holy Ghost teaches by inviting, prompting, encouraging, and inspiring us to act. He can facilitate opportunities and invite us to learn, feel, and act.
