AntiVirus/AntiMalware Software

There are 2 basic components to an AV/AM programs

•  AV/AM Engine

•  AV/AM Definitions

AV/AM Engine – The software that actually runs and prevents viruses and malware from installing onto your PC

AV/AM Definitions/Database – Just like a fingerprint database for criminals, when new viruses and malware get found, AV/AM companies add this “fingerprint” to their Database

AntiVirus/AntiMalware Software

PROBLEM: If the software stops running or stops getting updates, which is common, no one knows that it has stopped running or updating leaving you exposed to new threats that are coming out daily.

We have seen many new clients where they “think” their AntiVirus program is working, when in fact it is not, leaving them completely exposed to any virus, new or old.

SOLUTION:  With our platform, you will get alerts of infections, as well as if the software stops working or updating. Brook Networks will also do a monthly check to make sure it’s working and if it isn’t working or updating, we can remediate it for you for a small fee.

AntiVirus vs. AntiMalware Software

The difference between AntiVirus and AntiMalware may seem small, however in our experience, businesses should have both an AntiVirus AND an AntiMalware solution. Many products claim that they do both, but in our experience that just isn't the case.

We have seen viruses come onto a computer and the antimalware does nothing and vice versa. We think a multilayered approach works best. With our software, no clients have experienced an infection in 3 years, being installed on hundreds of endpoints.

Ways to get a virus

• We would guess that 60% of the time, it's actually someone typing in the name of a website incorrectly.
• Opening an attachment in email
• Clicking on a link in email.
• Virus on Thumbdrive
• Downloading software from the Internet

Most people think "Eh, I'm a small business. Those bad guys don't want to come after me, they just want the big guys with the money.

FACT: Most viruses are spread by BOTS. A bot is a program on the internet that goes out and actively tries to spread the virus however it can. Most people think there's a guy sitting behind a keyboard and monitor trying to get in, but in reality it's almost always automated, meaning there is no bias towards who the virus goes after.

We cannot guarantee that you will not get a virus. But we will help you to clean it up if you do get one. Our clients have no gotten infected with a virus in over 3 years. There are always new threats coming out every day. We do however stay on top of best practices and ways to make your network more secure and implement.

It does state in our contract that we cannot prevent every virus. We would suggest mentioning this, as a gesture of honesty on your behalf.

CryptoPrevent

Even though many products claim to block crypto viruses, otherwise known as ransomware, we take extra precautions and install a product called CryptoPrevent.

This software makes changes to the operating system that prevents many crypto viruses from being able to execute. This is just another example of our multilayered approach.

CryptoVirus - A virus that will encrypt the contents of your PC, as well as any network drives, rendering all of your files useless unless you pay the "ransom" for the key to unlock your data. This is how criminal make their money off of viruses.

Windows Security Patches

With most every software, when an operating system, such as Windows 10 gets created, it comes with many bugs or exploits in the system that are not known on Day 1. What Microsoft will do is to create a patch for the Operating System, thereby making the system more hardened against attacks and those particular exploits.

Exploit: a software tool designed to take advantage of a flaw in a computer system, typically for malicious purposes such as installing malware

If a PC is not up to date on security patches, your PC is vulnerable to any security holes that have not been patches yet, and there are hundreds of them.

The "Agent"

We use an RMM agent (Remote Monitoring & Management) tool from Continuum. This agent allows us many of the benefits that let us to much of the work behind the scenes.

• Gives us remote access to every PC via Logmein software.
• Will monitor each PC's Windows Security patches
• Monitor health of workstations such as disk space, applications installed, inventory, ability to run scripts to make changes/install software
• Ability to Blacklist "bad" patches
• Monitor network devices (We do not offer this feature however)

Monitoring

We are constantly monitoring the software platform. We make sure that the software the client purchased is actually working and doing it's job. This is the majority of the work with this platform, and the biggest benefit.

Here's just a brief example of the types of alerts that we get every day

- Our RMM agent has detected that all the machine(s) is/are not in compliance with regards to patching.

- An Avast Business CloudCare High-Priority Alert Occurred. Description: The device is infected with a security threat

- Description: The device has not connected with the CloudCare portal for an extended period of time.

- Description: Virus database update not run on device for an extended period of time.

- Description: The device needs to be restarted

- Description: Antivirus protection is disabled on the device
