Growing a Public History Program

• Reach out to public historians to gather information about  local/regional job market.
• Utilize those connections to assess possibilities of internships.
• Rely on local public historians for information about changes in the field and what skills will be necessary for future public historians.
• Gauging the ability of local institutions to fund graduate stipends or serve as partners in the development of curriculum and projects.

• Bruce A. Terry Collection - Great Lakes
  • 1 cubic foot collection composed of nearly 1,880 35mm color photographic slides of Great Lakes vessels.
• Mackinac Island Resort Occupational Folklore Collection - Great Lakes
  • Contains six sixty-minute audio tapes on which Peter M. Coogan recorded his interviews of thirty-seven seasonal workers on Mackinac Island in the summer of 1990.
• Realia Collection - Popular Culture Library
  • This collections is comprised of various realia figures
• Collaborate with regional institutions to digitize or produce exhibits

  • Develop programming and think more seriously professional side of public history (clients, audience, timeline)

Prioritizing Student Success

• Integrating public/digital skills into multiple courses in order to build a well-rounded portfolio.

• Actively seek out internship opportunities and provide funds for students to attend local conferences for networking purposes.

• Provide server space and web services for students to document and display their professional portfolios.
