Indila - Love Story

Introduction

France is home to Paris, the city of love. Because of this, in the field of classical music, France has produced a number of romantic composers. The first known sound recorder in the world was invented in France by Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville in 1857. Having a long history of music, France has produced many internationally renowned artists, particularly in the genres of nouvelle chanson and electronic music.

Summary

Love Story is an iconic pop song released in 2014. It was written and sang by a French singer called Indila. The song talks about a pair of star-crossed lovers who are madly in love. The lyrics describe the man as caring almost obsessively for the woman. However, it insists that the man "n'est pas fou". It further on goes that the man only acts this way because he believes in the love. It goes on, showing several scenarios where the man waits for her to take his hand. The first chorus sings that this is his love story. However, the chorus changes in the second verse and it now songs that it is "ma love story". This transitions into a passionate ending where the singer states that "one smile could build an empire, with you and me" and a final verse stating "we live in this love story".

Theme

The theme of everlasting love in Love Story is definitely the most fascinating and unique theme about this song. The idea of unconditional love is echoed repeatedly in the song. In the perspective of the male, it is said "he sees her everywhere" and "apart from her, he expects nothing". In the woman's, "I would be rich, and I would offer you all my gold" and "if you ignore me, I would offer you my last breath of life". This kind of commitment and passion is an indicator of true love and not any kind of superficial lust. In the music video, the commitment and love can be seen in the body gestures of the characters portraying the man and woman as well as in Indila, who acted as a medium of narration for the couple's intense emotions.

Culture

I was fascinated with this song because of its passionate portrayal of love. I realized some time ago that this genre of love songs have faded from modern music. While studying Chinese culture, I found that the dominant pop song theme from the 2000s to early 2010s was romantic, unconditional love. The same can be said for English pop songs. However, the theme of slow, romantic songs that can make you cry seem to be on the decline. Indila's Love Story, released in 2014, seems to be one of the last songs to portray the theme. Being so, it received over 100 million views on Youtube, a tremendous feat for a French song. Gone are the days of classic hits such as Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You, but surely the space of romantic love will be a niche in the musical community as long as the concept of love stays intact in our society.
