Q&A

Questions

  • What is a social construct? How does this relate to immigration?

  • Why does the national security frame dominate the debate on immigration?

  • Does prejudice inform the social construction of migration as a threat, or the other way round?

  • Which non-state actors are involved in the (de-)securitisation of migration and how?

  • What is ethnocentrism? Is it different to prejudice?

  • How could we measure ethnocentrism?

  • What causes ethnocentrism? How does it link to far-right parties? Would it work the same across the EU?

  • What is the role of the media(-framing) of immigration on the far right discourse?

Studio

  • Image you were invited to discuss immigration on the TV
  • I will assign you a role (politician, expert, host or audience)
  • We do 3 rounds so everyone gets their 5 minutes of screen-time
  • This can give you an idea of what it may look like

Q&A on the template

  • Form pairs
  • Tell (in two sentences) what is the problem that you are going to address.
  • Tell your peer what kind of data you will collect.
  • Reflect together whether the data will allow to address the problem at hand; are there potential issues that may arise during the data collection?

Q&A on the template

  • Did you manage to narrow down your problem statement / research question into one-two sentences? If not, you need to work on it and read more literature.
  • What are your thoughts about the data? Will you be able to gather relevant observations? What may go wrong?
  • Have a look at the work of others – there is nothing wrong in following good practices in data collection and reporting!

Thank you and see you on April 3rd!
