Digipak Analysis for Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" Album

This is the digipak for Katy Perry’s album ‘Teenage Dream.’ We instantly know who the target audience for this digipak based on the colour scheme which is Pink. The  target audience for this digipak are females. However, it can also attract male audiences due to the revealing images of the artist used in the front cover as well as the rest of the digipak. The front cover image makes the artist looks seductive and provocative which juxtaposes with the whole theme of the digipak. This signifies how a female artist can easily use herself by selling her products. Also, the fact that the artist is placed on a “pink cloud” or “candyfloss” gives a sweet and innocent feel to it.

The main title of the album which is ‘Katy Perry’ looks like it was written in candy laces, and the style of the “Teenage Dream” title looks like a candy cane. This gives an idea on what Katy Perry’s personality is like. It seems like the artist is a sweet, nice and fun person. Her personality reflects on what type of music the audience are going to listen to. The audience are going to expect upbeat songs; songs that they can dance to.

The candy floss or pink cloud is used as the main background for the digipak. The writing for the lyrics is written in ‘candy’ style again, especially the ‘O’s as lollipops. The style of the writing and the colours attracts the audience’s attention as it is unique and very vibrant. It stands out against the background. This is very important because if it did not stand out then the audience would   not be able to understand  the name of the songs. The copyright information is written in smaller text at the bottom of the album and this is important because if it was the same size as the track list then the audience would be confused which one is more important and having it in a smaller text doesn’t take any focus away from the track listing. It also makes it the album professional.

The images used for the album draws the audience’s attention to the artist’s face due to the fact that she is making direct contact with her target audience. This connotes that she is making eye contact with them to persuade them to buy the album. Also, make up that she is wearing is very heavy and it emphasises her eyes which makes draws the audience’s attention towards her.

The inside of the digipak shows the CD designed as a doughnut and  candy lollipop. This matches the ‘candy’ theme of the album and it would not  look good if they designed the cds completely different  from the whole album. It also highlights that Katy Perry is the  sweetheart of America.
