Note - during pandemic times:
- Online library services are always available
- In-person services are available in a limited capacity, which may change as the situation evolves.
- Physical library material are quarantined for seven days before being processed.
Currently:
Request physical books to pick up at
Elizabeth Dafoe Library
Request scanned portions of books in & outside our collection (up to 10% or 1 chapter)
Study space in Libraries suspended during code red
Accessing Books & Digitized Copies
- Placing requests for physical books
- Requesting scanned portions of books
- Accessing ebooks & articles
- Accessing items in HathiTrust
Requesting Items
- Sign in to the Library Search with your umnetID
- Problems signing in? Staff on the Ask Us library chat can help
- If the item is checked out, users have at least 7 days to return (we allow more if needed)
- No late fees during pandemic
- Check out from Hold Locker using your staff ID card
- Max 10 holds at a time

HathiTrust
- nonprofit organization based in the US
- preserving publications in digital format: currently over 17 million digitized items
- academic research libraries can pay an annual fee to become a member, support the digitization efforts, & gain access to resources & research tools
The UM Libraries became a member of HathiTrust this Summer, which means:
- 2.4 million public domain documents added to the Library Search (full download available)
- Emergency Temporary Access Service (only during the pandemic) - digital access to about 40% of our print collection
- Access to text mining tools via the HathiTrust Research Center
- Accessible Text service for users with a print disability
HathiTrust
- Full instructions on accessing material in HathiTrust
- Tip: "Electronic Resources Print Unavailable" location in Library Search means this is available in HathiTrust
If it's a journal article:
- Search with the name of the journal at hathitrust.org
- Find the volume, issue, & page number for the article
- Sign in to gain access to anything we have in print
- Use the Ask Us chat for help at any point!
Document Delivery
during pandemic times
No physical book requests
Request a copy of up to 10% or one chapter of a book
Request journal articles
Requesting a chapter or 10%
Search for the Table of Contents:
- in the Details area of a Library Search record
- via Google Books or Amazon (sometimes there is also a preview...)
- email documentdelivery@umanitoba.ca just to request the Table of Contents
- Provide at least the title, author, link to the book in the Library Search
Digital Reference Options
- Library Search > limit Resource Type to Reference Entries
- Many databases include reference entries - search "reference" in Databases A-Z list
- My favorite - Credo Reference
for when you miss browsing the stacks:
Virtual Browse
Includes books from all UM Libraries, not just the one where that book is located
Other handy Library Search features:
- Save queries & set up email alerts for when new records are added that match your search
- "find sources citing this" and "find sources cited in this" functions for articles
- New Records filter in left menu
- Include results beyond UofM (and request via Document Delivery using "Request from another library" link)

- No print reserves
- ask me if there's an ebook available for purchase
- scan up to 1 chapter or 10% of a book, upload to UMLearn
- Streaming video: if available, this can take between a few days to a few months to set up - request early...
