Today, football is no longer just a "European phenomenon," but has spread and is rapidly becoming a favorite sport as far away as South America and Asia.

Major League Soccer was founded in 1978 to provide the United States with a professional soccer competition at a professional level, as well as outdoor professional leagues in Canada, Mexico and Europe, in addition to the US Open Cup and the CONCACAF Champions League. In 1984, the two leagues merged and joined the US Soccer Federation (USSF).
