Banker
You live and work in Boston, with the most educated people in Massachusetts. Through your bank you are helping grow the economy. Protestors don't understand: If the state defaults on its debts, it will ruin the economy.
YOU WANT:
A prosperous Massachusetts
YOU FEAR:
Losing money invested in state notes
Trader
You are a trader specializing in fruits and preserves. You live near the seaport in Boston with your younger sister. After your father died in the war, you inherited his business. It is very difficult running a business in such turbulent times.
YOU WANT:
A safe and stable state
YOU FEAR:
Mobs, violence, anarchy
Regulator
YOU WANT:
More say in government
YOU FEAR:
Rich bankers & traders control the government
You are a lawyer from Great Barrington. You represent a lot of poor farmers struggling with debt. You believe the common folk have little power. They need protection from wealthy bankers & traders.
Farmer
You tend a small farm in Pittsfield. Your neighbors fled to Vermont because their debtors threatened to jail them. The government should protect its citizens!
YOU WANT:
Freedom to work our land & grown our farms
YOU FEAR:
Going to jail because of debts & taxes
Finance
Farmers came to us in need.
We helped them. Now they blame us for their poverty.
If the state defaults on its debt, who will ever trust Massachusetts again?
Everyone must pay their debts!
THINK...
Building a prosperous state requires a government. And a government needs money to operate. That means paying your taxes.
A state note is a contract and contracts need to be honored.
THINK...
The veteran farmers who helped free this country are getting ripped off.
Bankers and traders are using the government to line their own pockets.
We've replaced a king with bankers and traders.
THINK...
The bankers use the notes owed us to enrich themselves.
First, we have to sell our notes for pennies. Now our taxes go to the bankers who bought those notes.
The government has fallen into the hands of the wealthy. They're a gang of thieves!
FARMERS ARGUE...
Finance Proposals
Increase Taxes on Foreign Goods
Also known as tariffs. Merchants would pay taxes on international imports when passing through Boston Harbor.
Sell Public Land to Raise Funds
Sell unused land and use the proceeds to cover state expenses. This would permit the state to lower taxes.
Devalue State Notes
Stop financiers from profiting off Massachusetts tax dollars. People holding state notes would get back what they paid for them, not twenty times more.
VOTE ON Proposals
THE WINNER IS...
What actually happened
Government did sell public land.
Taxes on farmers dropped dramatically.
Payments on the state debt dwindled. Finally, the Federal Treasury bought it.
Debrief
How do you deal with different perspectives on the same problem?
What strategies did you use to try and work together?
Whatβs more important, sticking to your ideals or creating compromise?

VOXPOP: Tapping the Power of Live-Action Roleplay
Through our work with museums and schools, we have developed a set of best practices for creating and facilitating live-action role-plays about civics and history. In this presentation, we explore how teachers can continue to use role-plays to engage students in digital classrooms.
