Processo em que um local sem vida, gradualmente sofre modificações, até o surgimento de um Ecossistema.

O primeiro passo para esse processo, é a colonização de um local inóspito por qualquer ser vivo pelas chamadas "espécies pioneiras".
A partir daí, teremos as 3 etapas subsequente da sucessão ecológica: Ecese, Sere e Clímax.
