Skill development roadmaps
Took a first pass at most of the roles at TWG (thanks to the folks who helped)
Scott/Chris M. have created a 2.0 version. We want all roles to get to this, eventually.
With that in mind, we will use the “Developer” role as the first test of a mentorship program
Learning with Professor Tadman
Scott will spend 1.5 hours/day mentoring devs
Use skill development roadmaps to help guide the process and find areas to focus on
Apprentices will go through a 3-month primer
More class-style
Project-based learning
Juniors will work with Scott, too
Get help on production problems
Production pairing
Use the learnings from the first
Goals for TWG EDU’s first 3 months:
Spread the word about our new education policy
Encourage and track purchases of resources, courses, conferences, etc.
Build (and build up) the TWG Library
Implementing (and learning from) a mentorship program for apprentices and junior developers
1-3 MOOC Groups running on evenings (and finishing the courses!)
Run 1 hackathon and have some new tools to show for it
More “What I learned/Accountability” demos on Friday from TWG EDU activities (knowledge-transfer)
Develop 2.0 versions of skill development roadmaps for all roles at TWG
Gather feedback about TWG EDU throughout
Set up an EDU section in the wiki
Create a central EDU calendar with all education/MOOC events
Benefit:
Onboarding and team skill growth
TWG reputation & recruitment
Development of technology for internal use or bizdev initiatives
Staff morale
Staff retention, long-term thinking
Knowledge retention and transfer
Strong relationships within the company
Better sense of company-wide strengths & weaknesses
Better informed performance evaluations
