Data Management

"The development, execution and supervision of plans, policies, programs, and practices that control, protect, deliver, and enhance the value of data and information assets."

Policy

A set of ideas or a plan of what to do in particular situations that has been agreed to officially by a group of people.

The Goal: Boring Data Management

Data Management must be holistic, top down, driven by policy.

Good Data Management is automated, enforced, auditable, open source.

Challenges Reasons
Leadership requires vision, ambition, time, money
Humans buy-in, follow through, consistency
Communication words, consistency, meaning, interoperability
Process code, software tools, longevity

People should make the policy.   Computers should execute the policy.

Data management

should be

data-centric and metadata driven.

Future-proof automated data management

requires

open formats and open source.

iRODS Policies

The reflection of real world data management decisions in computer actionable code.
