QUESTION 3
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE RESEARCH?

introduction

Gathering audience feedback for my promotional package is a vital process as it allows me to gather other peoples opinion on whether or not they enjoy the specific media form, this then in effect gives me feedback to help me improve aspects of my work.  Also, it is important to target the target audience, which in my case is people who enjoy the 'Indie' genre.  It is important to target these people as they will have the most knowledge and experience with viewing such packages as it would be something that they associate themselves with.

To gather audience feedback on my music video, magazine advertisement and digipak,  I have asked a series of questions to students within my school whom have yet to see my promotional package. I have chosen 6 students in which I have chosen to give me feedback, this means that two people will observe and gather feedback on either of the three ancillary tasks.

THE CHOSEN SIX

I made sure that three out of the chosen six which were to offer me audience feedback on my work associated themselves with listening to the 'Indie' genre, this would help me gather more information from those who observe and listen to similar types of music. The other three people I have chosen  do not see themselves as 'Indie lovers',  instead they listen to a variety of different music such as Rock, Pop and Grime. I believe that this is important as it will provide me with an alternative interpretation on my work, this is because they wouldn't have experienced  anything similar to my work as they do not associate themselves with that type of genre.

The chosen six will be divided into three groups when answering the questions,  below is a formation of the groups and what aspect of my work they'll be providing feedback:
- Group 1: Boy  (17yrs)  Boy (18yrs) will be providing feedback on the music video.
- Group 2: Boy  (17yrs)  Girl (18yrs) will be providing feedback on the magazine advertisement.
- Group 3:  Boy  (18yrs)  Boy  (18yrs) will be providing feedback on the album digipak.

GROUP ONE

The first group will be offering feedback on my music video, to help them, I have provided questions for them to answer on the music video, they will then answer them and provide me with their response which will ultimately help me with the development of my music video. Below are the questions I gave them:

1. How much did you enjoy the music video?

2. Did it catch and hold your attention?

3. What are your thoughts on the editing of the music video?

4. How do you rate the camera work in the music video?

HOW MUCH DID YOU ENJOY THE VIDEO?

Boy (18yrs): " The music video came across as very professional , I enjoyed the editing and the different transitions and effects used throughout, the one problem was the plot which didn't make much sense.
The transitions and effects which I have used come across as professional which is always a good thing, however the plot is questioned which isn't always a negative thing as it leaves the audience with questions.
Boy (17yrs): "I enjoyed the music video, I thought it was very attractive due to the editing techniques used and also the camera effects attracts you from the very beginning."
This is very positive feedback, I learnt that the camera effects and the editing of the music video works really well and that I shouldn't change it.

DID IT CATCH AND HOLD YOUR ATTENTION?

Boy (17yrs): "Yes, it did. The opening in where some clips are blurred add mystery to who the character is, which in effect made me want to watch more."
The addition of the blurred effect when using the camera was purposeful as I intended to add mystery to the character personality, I'm glad that this interpretation worked and wasn't mislead for poor camera work.
Boy(18yrs): " The music video did catch and hold my attention throughout, the effects really helped create the idea that the character was on a journey which caught my attention."
Again, this effect was used purposely to create the idea that the character was on a journey through the woods. This shows that the effect was well used within my music video and didn't come across as misleading.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE EDITING OF THE MUSIC VIDEO?

Boy (17yrs) "I really enjoyed the editing of the video, it created the idea that the character was on a journey and also it really engaged me to want to watch more."
The process behind the editing of my music video was that I wanted the character to be on some sort of journey, using the different transitions helps create this effect and helps to engage the audience to want to see more.
Boy (18yrs) "The different effects used in the video really look professional and create a very sophisticated look, the one I aspect I thought could be improved was the color correction as it looked too dark."

The color correction I create from scratch was a very cautious move and I felt that the footage needed to be darkened due to the exposure, however, from this feedback this tells me that perhaps the footage did not need to be darkened to such an extent.

HOW DO YOU RATE THE CAMERA WORK IN THE MUSIC VIDEO?

Boy (17yrs) " At some points the footage seemed a little shaky however most of the shots seemed still. I really liked the camera swipe effect too."
To make sure that I didn't have shaky footage I filmed twice in order to pick and choose which was the best clip, obviously having taken into account the feedback, I would have also needed to of stabilized the footage using the editing software.
Boy (18yrs) "Mostly all the shots were very still and professional, apart from one or two nearer the end of the video. Overall you have done a good job with filming your music video."
Again, I should have used a stabilizer through After Effects or even use the tripod more often for the more trickier shots to make sure that the clips were completely still.

GROUP TWO

The second group will be giving feedback on the magazine advertisement, below are the answers in which I have given them to answer regarding the advert:

1. Does the magazine advert look professional?

2. Do you like the color scheme of the advert?

3. Have I used the correct conventions on the advert?

DOES THE MAGAZINE ADVERT LOOK PROFESSIONAL?

Boy (17yrs) "I believe that the advertisement looks very professional and it looks like something which would actually feature within a music magazine."
This was one of the main aims for which I wanted to achieve, I wanted the advert to look as good as one which would feature within a music magazine, therefore I am happy with this feedback.
Girl (18yrs) " Yes the advert looks very professional, the conventions used create an almost exact replica of something which would feature within a music magazine such as the band title, image of band member and title of the album."
I made sure that I had researched the common conventions in which would feature on a magazine advertisement, this helped to form the idea that this 'poster' was actually an advertisement for the band which I am promoting.

DO YOU LIKE THE COLOR SCHEME OF THE ADVERT?

Boy (17yrs) "The color scheme within the advert is very natural due to the wooden background, I think it looks good and links nicely with the music video."
As a promotional package, the aim was to make sure that all three media tasks would match so thankfully the feedback shows that the natural color scheme matches the natural theme within the music video.
Girl (18yrs) "I really like the color scheme of the advert, it makes it look very professional as there are no bright colors which could make it look rather childish."
I wanted to use very bold colors as it linked nicely with the natural theme which I was going for throughout the three tasks, I also strayed away from bright colors as these could portray a much more childish approach. I feel that I chose well and the finished product paid off.

HAVE I USED THE CORRECT CONVENTIONS IN THE ADVERT?

Boy (17yrs) "I believe that the correct conventions were used such as band title, album name etc however he could have included tour dates to make it more professional and informing."
From this feedback I understand that I should have added tour dates because with just the tour destinations this wouldn't be informing to the actual audience.
Girl (18yrs) " The conventions used are incredibly similar to that of an actual magazine advertisement making it look better, giving it the impression that it could feature in a magazine."
The main target was to make sure that it looked as professional as possible, so I am pleased with this feedback as she is saying that it could actually feature within a magazine.

GROUP THREE

Group three will be providing feedback for the album digipak , below are the questions I have provided in order for them to give feedback:

1. Does the digipak look professional?

2. Have I used the correct color scheme?

3. Would the digipak encourage you to buy the album?

DOES THE DIGIPAK LOOK PROFESSIONAL?

Boy (18yrs) " Some aspects of the digipak look professional, for example the front and back, however I believe the inside cover should involve more content."
From this feedback it has made me realise that to improve my digipak, I need to add more common conventions in which would feature on a album digipak.
Boy (18yrs) "I really like the colors used as it stands out to the consumer. Also, the way the characters face features within the text looks very professional."
I'm pleased that this feedback suggests that the editing was professional and also that the color scheme 'stands out' as I believed it may of been too bright.

HAVE I USED THE CORRECT COLOR SCHEME?

Boy (18yrs) " The blues and the reds used on the digipak blend well together how I believe the brightness is a little excessive."
From this feedback this tells me that I should have used more subtle colors on my digipak to help it stand out to the consumer more as a professional digipak.
Boy (18yrs) "I really like the colors used on the digipak, I think the brightness really helps to make it stand out to the consumer and the colors reflect mood of the music."
This is a contrast to the previous quote however it shows that a consumer can have different thoughts of a particular object, for example the digipak stands out to the second boy compared to the first who said it was 'too bright'.

WOULD THE DIGIPAK ENCOURAGE YOU TO BUY THE ALBUM?

Boy (18yrs) "Yes and no, I think the layout of the digipak is good however the color scheme really makes the album look too bright and childish."
I take this feedback into account and if I was to change the digipak next time I would make sure I use more subtle blues to make sure all of the audience are happy with the finished product.
Boy (18yrs) " I would, I think it looks professional and it wouldn't look out of place in a music store, the colors help to highlight the type of music which would make me want to buy it."
My aim was to make the digipak stand out so it wouldn't look out of place compared to other music digipaks, so in evaluation it seems that I have achieved my goal.
